It was a prop strike from another aircraft. I first saw the pic several years ago when it was circulated with a story about a jealous wife who cut the aircraft up with a chainsaw. Looking at the damage at the wing root and the engine nacelle it was obvious that it was hit by something so I did about 5 minutes of searching and came up with the real story. This was the final aircraft that was hit by the runaway. I think 4 or 5 others were struck also. The runaway was a hand prop job and the pilot forgot to set the parking brake before he cranked it up. He was lucky to be able to get out of the way in time.

The Mythbusters did a show about the chinsaw shredded plane story. They tried both ways (i.e. chainsaw and prop of another aircraft) and the chainsaw looked nothing like that sort of damage. The chainsaw cuts were very jagged, tending to pull the skin away from the frame of the plane. The propeller made slashes very similar what is seen in the photo.

By strange coincidence, logo on the tail is the crest of my former university. I can explain! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/halo.gif

From the same site, so yeah, prop strikes seem pretty consistent.

Wasn't the owner of the other aircraft to be sued by the Uni? He damaged more than one aircraft I believe.
