I currently run an Opteron146 @3.0GHz/X1900XT/DFI Ultra D 2x512Mb OCZ Plat Rev2 /Audigy 2ZS/Antec NeoPower 480W/Maxtor 250Gb

The setup below -all new stuff-is available for 550 euro/370GB/$750US

CASE : Enermax Pandora Case
MOBO: ABIT AB9 QUAD GT
CPU: CORE 2 DUO 6600
RAM: XMS2 6400 CL4 4x512Mb
HDD:SAMSUNG 160GB SATA
GPU: MSI NX8600GT-T2D256E-OC DIRECTX 10
DVD: DVD/CDRW
PSU:Enermax Liberty 620 Watt PSU
EXTRAS:SUNBRAM 4 WAY FAN CONTROLLER

Should I buy it and stick my X1900XT in there instead of 8600GT?

Is the 4x512Mb much inferior to 2x1Gb as Ive heard some say?

Is Vista as bad as everyone says?

Thats a nice system but in my opinion you should opt for a better performing card. Perhaps you could back the CPU down to a e6400 and get the 8800GTS or 2900XT. Your 1900XT is better then the 8600GT. I would go with 2x1GB sticks as it leaves room for more ram in future and no you will see no performance loss. Vista? Well you will find much debate on this one and think most will tell you to stay with XP. Especially if you tend to enjoy this sim and games of today. I believe the general thinking is you loose about 10% performance with Vista over XP. Also it should be noted that SoW will be OpenGl and not DX10. If you really want to try out Vista it would be recommended that you have a copy of XP handy as well. This way you can simply do a dual boot with both and get the best of both worlds.

The 8600GT sucks big time - go for a 8800 GTS at least. Otherwise the upgrade will not mean a significant progress for you...

My two cents

Why a 6600 cpu? Surely the 6750 would be better and cheaper...

Upgrade BUT KEEP YOUR GPU

The X1900XT is more then enough for iL2....

This game is CPU bound so a new CPU will increase your FPS by a lot (from intel to intel... a 0.2Mhz increase yeilds a 10% increase in FPS... so you do the math)

Havok summed it up pretty well.

It's a decent system and an upgrade in some ways. You may not notice much difference in performance between the two for various reasons. Personally, I absolutely love the E6600. It overclocks like a mofo, has the 4mb of cache and runs very cool. The X1900XT is a bit faster than the 8600GT. If you could upgrade that VC to even a low-end 8800 (like the 8800GTS 320mb) I'd say it's a no-brainer.
