View Full Version : OT: For the Canucks Here - Our Troops in Afghanistan

I thought I'd share some pics of our boys [and girls] serving in Afghanistan. We seem to be the latest on the hate list of the Taliban. Oh well, we were warned that we would be on their [s]hit list.

Without further ado, these pics I garnered off a Canadian news site [sorry they're so small]:

We take our hockey seriously:

My pleasure. I just heard on the news today that another car bomber attacked one of our vehicles, injuring one soldier. I'm glad to see that our troops have some good equipment which is saving lives.

We as Canadians like to think that we are perceived differently on the world scene than our American cousins. I say that with no slight intended toward Americans. Some Canadians think that because of our history and tradition as peackeepers that we are thought of as the good guys in the West. Not everybody sees it this way. I'm pretty sure the Taliban sees us as no less evil than the Americans. Some people just hate for the sake of hate. Although we are in their country to do good, helping them rebuild their country, we are regarded as intruders and are thus targets. As a country, we took a lot of heat because we did not go into Iraq. I'd just like it to be known that we still are assisting with the war against terrorism and although puny, we are still helping Uncle Sam.

Thanks for the link. Some good pics there, showing what Canadian troops do best, assist the locals to get their lives back together. This is truly "hearts and minds" stuff that was first practiced by the Brits in Malaya to fight the communist insurgency. For the most part, I think the Afghan people are appreciative of what our troops are doing there. We are not there as some form of superpower hegemony. One pic in that link says it all: our soldiers are protecting an orphanage that is under threat of being burned down by the Taliban. They'd rather see their kids dead or homeless than be "contaminated" by Westerners.

That's very clever how they used those containers and converted them into little shops. They have even framed and glazed them. How clever! In my job as a trucker I've handled many of those containers in my capacity as a yard trailer jockey. Closing those doors could sometimes be quite an ordeal. They get exposed to seawater and if they are not maintaned well, the hinges get sticky. Being as they are made of steel, it must get very hot inside one of those in summertime. I see the one in the middle has a small fan in the window to improve air circulation. If you look at it carefully, you will see that it is installed so as to suck air out, not draw air inwards. The logic of this is that it will draw out the hotter air that rises toward the ceiling. Very clever.
