The cost in renown for specialty torps is killing me in late '43. I mean, C'mon! You guys know what I mean! Geez! 800 for a torp?

As I noted elsewhere, the U-boot interrogations link that was posted on this forum a few days ago was very revealing. A VII-C in the Med carried 12 Torps (no externals), had the deck gun removed, and a full complement of LuT's and Homing torps. It also had no radar. I'd guess this was typical. That means renown cost for torps is way out of line.

You can get them on the black market. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

I am a little irritated that (correct me if I'm wrong), if I buy, say 2 acoustics and don't use em, I have to repurchase em for the next patrol.

I also found out that if I happen to get assigned an acoustic merely by chance and I wish to offload it, they won't credit my account for the renown, and if I did it accidentally, it would cost me to put it back!

Good points. I replace my type 3's and with the steam ones and get no renown back. I wonder if their is a Wal-Mart near Lorient.

Well cant you just modify the cfg file to have the torps cost less? I dont know how to do it, but I am sure there is a way. Maybe someone with a better knowledge of the cfg files.

That's exactly what I did. I was just looking through the cfg files and I found the cost of the torps. I changed them all to zero.

No one argue to me about "realism" now. I don't care about it. I just want to play a game.

Not sure it is "realistic" to charge renown for torps anyway myself.

I was asking myself the same question. Why am I getting charged to arm my boat? I felt like "do you want me to sink ships or not?"

Get the mod "Wolfie's Tweek Pack." You can change the torp load out to whatever you like and you don't have to spend any renown.

Its all too simple people, dont spend your renown on everything you see or can get ahold of, dont get radar anything since it only attracts hunters to you, but DO get counter radar. Skip ships that are only ok and save it for the ship you want then load it out and stick with it. Spend a little extra time out at sea and get another ship or two, and most of all, patrol your zone, free renown for just sitting there. I have a maxed out type 7c 42 and still have 27k renown. I can put any type of harpoons in my tubes and wont even dent my renown since I replace it with the ships I sink.

ALL FAT and LUT fish are a waste and worthless, I have been using steam and acoustics only, and am at 2.6 million tons. Dont be greedy, dont change files, and donts spend renown on things you dont need.

On my last campaign in a Type VIIb, I got to the point where I was being given 3 acoustic homing torpedoes every time. I simply put all three of them in the stern for use against escorts and kept the bow filled up with normal fish, either half electric and half steam or all electric once those 30kt long range ones came out.

Definition of renown:
http://www.m-w.com/cgi-bin/dictionary?book=Dictionary&va=Renown&x=21&y=16

Put it simply. The more well liked you are by higher command the better chances you will have at getting first pic at the best equipment.
It simulates showing favoritism for the good Keluens by the Brass.

So finish those patrols and sink those ships!
May all of your shots be hot, straight and normal.

Irritating .... it seems you did not buy the torpedo, you hired it, and you have to continue to hire it for each patrol http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Yeah, but sometimes I'll have an unused acoustic and I come back to base and not only are they gone. There aren't any available to restock either! That hurts.

Moral of the story:
If you have torps in your boat, your mission is NOT over.

stankhammer7

well you dont have to go to your original base, stop in a friendly base and rearm, all that will happen is you dont get assigned a grid to patrol and you are free to do what you want, then outfit your sub with the acoustics or other fish you prefer, you dont HAVE to return to base and you can outfit your crew with medals at another base as well so youll lose nothing but a patrol grid most dont patrol anyways.

..But you have no access to your boat in a Friendly Port other than your home base €" so torpedo load-out is selected for you.
What I most detest about that is that SH III really screws it up, too. Placing the odd Type here and there ad hoc, usually effectively nullifying the ability to fire a spread of €˜twins€ or €˜triplets€ €" or €˜quadruplets€ €¦

My loadout was never selected for me and I could in fact swap out my torpedos, while at brest I went to st nazaire and came out with a selection of my choice, perhaps you are trying to dock at an english port for a loadout?

Just a bit of cost analysis...and to add to the argument...

It doesn't make sense to have to spend 800 renown for a TV acoustic when (and if you sink it) your primary target for these is a Destroyer. How much does a sunk destroyer add to your renown,...maybe 50? 70? renown? That's not a very good exchange ratio...

You might be able to hit a fast moving cruiser or battleship...but then it's going to take more than one torpedo...

stankhammer7

who cares about exchange ratio, everyone seems to nitpick every little thing, I imagine if everyone crying about this or that would get their way, theyd find that their dream sub game would soon be a beer coaster on an endtable somewhere and it would only be fun for about two weeks tops. If you dont like the exchange ratio, then dont use the harpoons, use the free steamers so you can save your renown for a can of turtle wax to polish your sub with. And no one said you had to use that harpoon on a destroyer, use it on something bigger, if you cant sink a destroyer with a regular harpoon, then dont try to engage it, after all sinking destroyers only gets you a few renown like you just said so whats the point? If you cant evade a destroyer and feel you have to sink it to get away, then your evasive and tactical skills is that of a box of donuts,............full of holes.

Stankhammer...don't get me wrong...this is the best simulation out there for WWII subs...But the discussion here is on the price of torps. The DVD has not left the laptop since I purchased it!

...I'm also a numbers guy...so I like to do this type of cost benefit and exchange ratio analysis (it's actually my job in real life...determining acceptable loss ratios)...

...and more than once has a U-boat commander decided to attack a lone Destroyer than to flee...read the history.

I use the accoustics on the escorts so that I can molest the convoy unmolested,I'm just that kind of guy.Later in the war the merchies start shooting staight so it's time limited.

stankhammer7

if its to the point where you are getting all cost effective then you been playing too long, as for sub history, Im more than fully aware of the dealings of subs vs hunters. Everone is complaining about ohhh I see too many ships, then later complain when they dont find any for what ever reason, then how they fire salvos just like real captains did, as if they are trying to make it as lifelike as possible but it will never ever happen, all this took place 60 years ago and no one here will be a sub captain running around sinking ships so those people need to get over it and just enjoy the stories and the history.

I have about 3 missions left before the war is over for me, been this way for about 2 weeks now and am in no hurry to end the game since its more work than fun, I might just leave port then redock my way to the end of the war to just end it, my game is back in its box somewhere on my desk, its that unimportant to me anymore since I basically have done it all and gone everywhere and sank everything.

As for my signature and avatar, I felt it best to just be plain this time around since Ill be leaving the forums, the game, and ubi very soon.
