Very good post.

This reminds me of a novel from Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, when he and his radioman made a forced landing in the desert and tried to reach humans on foot. While they struggled their way through and got terribly thirsty, he started to fantasyse about organges, juicy oranges, and cannot divert his thoghts from it. So simple things in life - clean water, fresh air, a safe place to sleep - and we start to value them only after losing them.

The diary is a rarity of its own, because you hear a lot of stories how certain people (like Saint-Exupéry for example) made it to safety, so you get the false impression that almost everyone can make it. Not true and the moment of realizing your own demise is probably the hardest to bear alone.
