Hello everyone! Just bought my first copy of IL-2 v1.03 and it wont work. AT ALL. Max install. Running an AMD 475/2 with 128 Mb on Win 98FE and its shows the IL-2 screen(helmet and schematic)then flickers twice and then disappears. Got a P3 666mhz downstairs but i cant be bothered to clear 600mb of the HDD. Messed about in setup but to no avail. Can anyone help. Going off UBISoft on PC rapidly after Silent Hunter II and now this. 8-(

You might try running the il2set.exe(not the install exe) in the main folder. Then go to the video tab and choose your card or if it is not there choose the safe option.

And also test turning off the sound. I remember I occasionally had troubles with it.

What video and sound card? Which driver version for video?

Provided you're talking about the original 2001 release of IL2 Sturmovik v1.03 it will run on that system (just) provided video and sound cards are up to it. I ran on a P-II 500 with 192MB RAM and GF3-Ti200 when it first came out. On your machine it wont be a very pleasant experience though, frame rate will be low and there will be frequent pauses when object models load.

The P3 would be better but you'll still be wanting at least 256MB RAM for Win98 or 512MB for WinXP to have any hope of smooth missions and a GF4 Ti4200 or better for graphics.

I would actually like to have a legacy machine so I could run some of my older sims like EAW, EF2000 and the stuff from Jane's.

It used to run pretty well on my old eMachines 900MHz Celeron machine once I added a 32Mb MX400 PCI card and bumped the RAM up to 256Mb.

Trying to run it on the onboard graphics processor with 3Mb shared video RAM was a no-win situation though, and put me on the wasteful computer upgrading spiral I maintain to this day...

cheers

The virtual machine that ships with Windows 7 actually does a pretty good job of running the desktop of older operating systems though we haven't tried 98 yet, drivers may be an issue.

Clearly you get a performance hit with a Virtual machine but we are talking 90's software here. Installing 98 SE on an i7 Pentium should give rocket performance even in a VM.

For once Microsoft did something properly and it works how it should, I was impressed.

I've used programs like 'cpu killer' to slow down my system to run older games but even a 99% slowdown isn't enough with newer machines.

IL-2 v1.03

What I really want to know is who on earth is still selling this ancient version of the game http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Even if the OP gets it to work the FM's were way out compared to even the FB period. Just taking off in a 109 was an achievement in 1.03. Though I must say the sound engine back then was way more gutsy.

Thanks chaps! I'll transfer my photos off my P3 to my AMD and try it on that. Or I might just go back to playing EFA 2000.....
