All of the maps in FB/PF are inaccurate. With the exception of the Coral Sea map.http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

I've always wondered if the Russian maps were to accurate scale or not. The maps don't delineate any measurement for the grid, so you don't know any relative distances. Or do they?

I don't care about the map accuracy. It is just a game!

Get a globe and find a 1000x1000km square of ocean there.... it's impossible - map wrong http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/59.gif

A few days ago I was flying a Chaika over the Crimea (trying to fight a Schwarm of 109Fs) when I passed over the "Swallow's Nest"- a castle located on the south coast west of Yalta. I hadn't noticed it before and this was quite a shock, to see such a level of realism! On the other hand, I have tried to locate a fortress with two twin 12" turrets while flying over Sevastopol- it is still there in real life, although post-war the twin turrets were replaced by triple 12" turrets. So far however I have failed to find the fortress on the FB map so it would seem that it has been overlooked. Strange, since that fortress played a significant role in the siege of Sevastopol in 1942.

Sure they do. Just look closely at the picture in TheGozr's first posting.

I dont know how accurate or not they are. All is know is that i live in central Kyushu and you can see the mountain behind my town and the river it is situated on! How cool is that. I can buzz my virtual abode in PF!

Since I live in Varaždin (SW edge of Balaton map), I can tell you that in 1945. there was no lake NE of the town. It was built in 1977. for the hydroplant http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif. On the other hand, there are two bridges going from Varaždin to Œakovec, and railroad bridge is east of road bridge, just like on the map http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_cool.gif

I've been on vacation in BalatonFured a few years ago, had a great time there and in FB, I could fly over the places that I've been to http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

I hope they'll do a lowlands map sometimes (Netherlands, Belgium)

@plumps,

I see your point. But, the more "tactical" you make the map, e.g., the more zoomed in you go, the more likely you are to lose your sense of scale.

It'd be nice if each "magnification" of the map would include a nice

|---- 10km ---|

visual reference that gave you quick info on how wide each grid square was. You often don't have time during a combat sortie to "zoom back out" and try and figure that out, especially when the server in question has no map nav aids, and you can "lose your place" on that map while you investigate.

In the main, the scenery is a reasonably decent representation. A certain amount of terrain smoothing is the result in part of the mesh resolution. This fact was driven home after reading the book, "Flyboys", which chronicled the capture and murder of several Americans after being shot down over Chichi Jima. An aerial photo of the island included in the book shows a much more formidable topography than is seen on its counterpart in PF.

Most annoying to me are the rivers. Virtually all are of near-constant width, even if they're only 2 km-long creeks which in reality would make scooping out a cupfull of water a chore. But even worse are the occasionally-seen geographicically impossible crossing over of rivers, as is well seen to the west of Pearl Harbour. From a distance, such places as the south Oahu and north Guadalcanal coasts are so dominated by waterways as to be somewhat irritating to look at.

As for the in-flight maps, it sure would be nice to have higher resolution, not-so-pixellated versions. They are only bitmaps, so should not cause significant performance issues (read, FPS).

I think they're close enough. The maps that are really amazing are the ones in LOMAC. Unbelievable how realistic they are. Its also kinda cool to comapre locations in LOMAC to the same locations in IL2.

I can say that Leningrand and the Karelian Isthmus are accurate - of course the buildings don't match up exactly but major ones - such as the winter palace are correct. I live on block SW along river Neva from the winter palace. If you want to bomb my house - it is the first purple one SW of the part which is SW of the winter palace (large blue building for those not familiar with it).
