Just swapped my E8500 cpu for an E8600...now Id spent 2 years plus overclocking (from 3.8GHz to 4 to 4.2 +) the C0 stepping E8500 so when I swapped in the E0 stepping E8600 I was expecting great things and wasnt disappointed .Im currently gaming away at 4.6GHz and 4.5Ghz is rock solid using LIN X stability tester .I realise ultimately a well overclocked i7 will be faster and the way forward when finances allow, but Im well pleased with this !!!Noticeably smoother in COD4 at 2560x1600 maxxed out !

Asus Maximus 2 Formula -latest BIOS
OCZ Vendetta 2 with OCZ Freeze thermal paste

4.5Ghz on a Core2 is nothing to sneeze at. Well done!

What are your temps and voltages?

Not to be a naysayer but this really doesn't mean a lot without before and after benchmark data.

Awesome. I'm currently overclocking my Droid X (a smartphone for those not in the know), which is a whole new level of geek, lol! In fact it's so geeky I think my virginity came back.... http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/blink.gif

Overclocking Graphics card makes practically no difference as many would guess .Game is VERY cpu limited.

Indeed, I did some testing myself and found this seemingly true. Too bad we will never be able to multithread IL-2. Could you imagine? http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/bigtears.gif
Are those FPS scores with stock 4.09m or UP2.01?

Nice job!

To be honest a mid-high ernd C2Duo is still totally fine for gaming.

Nobody needs the power (or expense) of the i7 yet for general gaming. Only if they want to play in extremely high resolutions at super high graphics.

I am more of a gameplay man myself, graphics are nice but nowhere near essential in general games. 1280x800 is totally fine for mw right now.

I will upgrade to a i7 or AMD equiv. once the next-gen intel chips are released and prices come way down.

Damn! That's a good job.

My E8400 C0 recently became unstable at 3.8, two years after I did around 24 hours of successful stability testing with LinX (then IntelBurnTest) and prime. I started getting 9C blue screens, so ran some stress tests which failed quickly... I stayed within Intels specified voltage and temperature limits the whole time too. The same tests at 3GHz pass, thankfully.

I've recently looked online for used or new-old stock E8XXXs but can't get any for a good price here, they're all about 75% of the price I payed when I first bought it.

Maybe try ebay.co.uk or ebay.com ...?Postage shouldnt be much for 'naked' cpu.Id HIGHLY recommend going for an E8600(all E0 stepping) or at least an E0 stepping -Its astonishing how much more stable and good an oveclocker the new E8600 E0 is vs the old E8500 C0

Ditto at 3.6ghz. Hoping to find the funds for a GTX460 graphics upgrade and I should be fairly set for low-mid level SoW.
