Well, the new patch has certainly given new life to FB, which is a very welcome thing. I think that the only thing that really is missing now is realistic sound effects.

I heard a real Mustang this year at Duxford and they sound fantastic, just like a Spit (wonder why that is - something to do with sticking a decent engine in it perhaps /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif ).

The Mustang I heard was popping and banging and had a real throaty growl to it, the game just sounds nothing like it - which is a real shame. /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-sad.gif I wish the guys would open up the sound system so that it could be tweaked.

This is what it should sound like:

Mustang Starting:

Mustang in Flight:
http://www.me109.net/sounds/p51/eng.wav

Mustang shutting down:
http://www.me109.net/sounds/109e4-g6/engoff.wav

Spit Flypast:
http://www.spitcrazy.com/Merlin1.wav

I fear that the Spit will sound like the '51 in FB which is a real shame as part of the spine-tingling character of the Spitfire (and 51) is the sound they make.

Check out more sounds of planes here - inc. the 109, Yak's and La's /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif
http://www.me109.net/frame_enginesounds.htm

Is there anything that can be done about it?

Hi,
The sound in il2fb is wraped. I loved
it in the original.

Yesterday evening i was flying online, there
was a me262 about 500 meters away and i
thought that it was nearby me.

When you are in the cockpit and you have the
wide view (that you can see the meters large) and
you move with your mouse the view, the sound changes
from good to muffed.

Very strange !!!

And what i have seen is when you are in the p39 the
sound is in front of you instead of behind you.

I have tested bothe sound dll`s.

Um, 500 meters is near you: that's easily in shooting range if he's dead 6.

Well, have you ever heard a late war Damiler-Benz? Nothing beats that! The menacing whistle, then the amazing whistling roar (supercharger effect) as it shoots past you. Amazing.

The sound in cockpit is likely to be very different,
though. One thing we do lack is the feeling the sound
vibrations accurately with our bodies. So even if you
have an accurate recording of the sound made by a Merlin,
it may not feel correct as the microphone doesn't record
the visceral feeling of the engine as you experience it.
Plus add in psychoacoustics - things are perceived
differently at different volumes. We're a long way
from being able to correctly model the feel (through the
seat of your pants) and sound of a plane at an arbitrary
loudness such that it is perceived the same way as the
real thing is when it is loud.

Depends on what gun you are firing with...

I wouldnt waste Mk108 at 500m, unless I REALLY need to down the plane at my 12...for some reason... /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

true, although you can't honestly tell me that the current sound system even approaches the recordings I've presented. I used to be a sound engineer, mainly live stuff, so I know how sound works - I also know that the '51 in FB sounds absolutely nothing like the real thing.

I look forward to the day when we hear the scream of a Merlin that sounds like a Merlin - maybe BoB will crack it /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

Yeah...having been present with a number of warbirds flying around and having watched a number of good videos with professionally done recording the ones we have in-game are fairly lacking.

The whistle and roar of the 109, the buzzing noise of the Zero's engine, the growl of the R-2800 in the Corsair and P-47, and the growling and puring that you get out of the Griffon and the Merlin engines...accurately reproducing them through the synth system that they have now is probably just impossible. Even so, the next game better feature some enhanced effects on the engines.

Why the heck do we keep seeing threads about a year old popping up to the front page?

My guess people have found the search feature and reply before realizing its an old one.

or perhaps because they've talked about abselutely everything there is to talk about on this thread 10 times over, so they just use old threads instead of making a new one
