I watch the rivers, folow them sometimes and have always found it odd that they just stop, or should I say start from nothing. Is this right, are rivers this way in the eastern front?

The rivers that I have seen are fed by smaller rivers that are fed from streams and never just start big from nothing. Could someone explain this to me.

I love this game and want it to be perfect.

Technically, rivers should start in the mountains, where they feed themselves with melted snow and ice...

They're eye-candy rivers, rather than accurate models of real rivers./i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

Hey, you know what? The rivers are definitely under-modelled. FB is biased against rivers. I've got a picture of a real river that I'm going to post. That should prove my point. Oleg is going to have to do a lot of explaining. This just isn't fair. I want my money back!

Yep, you're right. All rivers start out as a system of seeps, spring, runoffs that eventually combine enough to have continuous flow. These minor tributaries then continue to combine until streams and rivers are formed. Sometimes they start out from snowmelt, but some areas a catchment fed only by rainfall is more than enough to saturate the ground and start runoff for streams.

That said, the rivers you see in IL2/FB are a concession to hardware limits as well as design limits (time that is). It would take forever to put in little tributaries that eventually form a river. You'll also notice that the width of the rivers are more or less constant, with no rapids/glides/riffles, etc. Additionally, you'll see areas where lakes are formed without dams being present, something else that doesn't really occur. A good place to notice this is the Stalingrad area, the river there is much wider and the shoreline is more consistent with a modern dam controlled river system than what was present during the war. My guess is that the base maps for game development are from modern surveys. (You can imagine what a pain it would be to try and back out the 1940's river systems)

In the bigger scheme of things, until Oleg creates BassMaster "Be Sure You Catch Fish", I won't complain about the river modeling, there are plenty of other items to wish for.

I'm only guessing, but I'd say that rivers are only modelled from where the river system gets big enough to be a hindrance to vehicle traffic in the field. They also start/stop abruptly at the edge of the map area, although you can keep flying beyong that if you want.

I guess the small rivers are *overmodelled*.
Much to soon they are broad and wide rivers. Little creeks are missing or exaggerated.
But who cares ?!

In RL you have more ways to identify a river (i.e. trees nearby, 3D-vision, ...) while in FB not every machine can run with detailed landscape. So the wide rivers are a good way to give the pilot an impression of the surrounding landscape.

I was thinking a little about the rivers yesterday... within reasonable limits, would it be possible to model the river banks? Give them a little more definition along the edges.

Try perfect mode and you will see how differnet the river banks look! Oaah! so damn pretty!
