I know this comes up fairly frequently, but I haven't paid attention in a while. Is anything on the horizon? What is currently the best to play? I can't get my old copy of RB3D to run, so...

Apart from teh Knights of the Sky Gennadich thing which seems to have died on the vine...

... not much. There's something called Wings of War (arcade, apparently), First Eagles (Strike Fighters engine, so arcade), the CFS3 WWI mod (not even going to bother looking up title).

There's also this, which I'm pretty excited about, but it's a shooter:

If you want to get Red Baron running, go here and they will have you up in no time. RB is now a downloadable, with heaps of mods and still has a regular online community.

Also note the most dedicated group of core advocates to keep RB3D alive:

The Society of WWI Sim Artisans (http://www.swwisa.net/)

Those guys really put in heroic effort for years to fix the worst cracks and expand the game.

Though that URL seems dead, KOTS is alive and kicking and still passively scheduled for release 2nd or 3rd quarter '08.

From some of the screens posted (as well as one fine model ported for FSX) it should be all us WWI buffs could hope for.

Warbirds III had a set of WWI planes as far as I can recall.

Over Flanders Field Makes CFS3 enjoyable, IMHO.

Good to hear it's still in motion.

I believe they've worked pretty hard on the mod, I just can't take that game anymore.

Hehe...my wife made the mistake of getting me the DVD of The Blue Max for Christmas. I don't think she realized she was just feeding the beast. I spent the last two weeks downloading and setting RB3D on my 633mhz 'spare' PC. Great game...even works with my TrackIR. I highly recommend the Hells Angels Superpatch.

A more recent WWI sim that met with mixed reviews was First Angels. Search the forum and you'll find a few discussions about it. It looks pretty and supports TIR 6DOF but there is a limited plane set and takes place late in the war after the Americans had joined. However, an expansion pack has been released and there are plans to add more so...who knows? Can't hurt to check out the demo.
