Name your favorite planes and why??
try to avoid knocking other peoples choices and go with why you think yours is the best.

For me it depends on the era:
late war: P-47D
Its a good solid plane, and is very versatile in a variety of rolls.

mid war:
F4U-1A This is a sleek powerful design.
I found it a bit more versatile than the P-47D22, which i also favor, but for this era i feel i can get more out of this plane.

early war:
This was a toss up, but i've had a fun time flying the i-153 and the J8. I seem to have more success in them too.

Me-262 HG-II becuase I can shoot down 22 average AI with it. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Also becuase its fast and the most powerful aircraft on the game.

Plus it looks cool.

Your asking two different things here. Do you want my favourite or do you want to know my opinion of the best? They're different things....

Anyway my favourite of all time has to be the B17, i've been enchanted since a young age...

Very close to that is the Merlin Spitfires.

FW-190A - Fast, good looking and most importantly, you don't have to shoot twice http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif . Also tricky to fly efficiently, making it all the more satisfying to beat someone in performance, and ESPECIALLY satisfying in those rare moments when you manage to beat a turn fighter in their own game. I also like the Dora but I find it harder to control at high dive speeds, and it lacks that extra pair of 20 mm that makes the Antons so delightful http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif Her engine though, is pure sex.

Second favorite is Ki-84. Whether the overkill C variant or the more standard B variant I learned to love this plane because it's both very fast and can hold its own in turn fights. Armament of the B is satisfying, so is the roll rate, maneuverability, engine durability and dive performance. The only things I dislike are ease of blackout and most of all, its damn HUGE cowl flaps that eat up speed like crazy.

In early war setting where there was no FW 190 or Ki-84 I find my favorite plane to be the P-39. Decently armed, fast and climbs like crazy. The spins don't bother me because I play nice with her. Also doesn't overheat much and tricycle gear is a treat.

Other than these I can't say I *love* any other plane that I tried in the game. I know I should probably spend more time in some crates to learn how to use them efficiently and love them, but for now, nothing stands out too much.
The La series overheats too quickly, is outperformed at higher altitudes and its canons are a nightmare to shoot with, the spits I just dislike in general, low ammo and their engines die quickly when overheated. J2M is a good plane but meh, it feels like flying an unrealistic toy, almost like cheating actually, still fun though. Bf-109 is just too....I don't know, mellow for me. P-38 I love for ship bombing and HVAR rockets but I hate it for dogfighting. Corsair I only ever used a few times to bomb ships. Other american stuff I dislike because I want my ammo to explode.

Since it's recent i also fly allies , i'll do like DKoor and split by sides and year

1941 :
Axis : Bf-109 Emil : Just love this plane above all else , don't ask me why , it's irrational
Allies : P-40E : like the cockpit ,like the armament, dive performances and ground attack ability (like to take out ships with that cute 1000lb bomb ) , good aircraft for boom and zoom and the kind of tactics used for Emil , despite the poor climbrate

Ground attack : Ju-87b , it's an addiction .

1942 :
Axis : Bf-109 Friedrich : Again , Messerschmitt are my favourite type , learned with them , flew with them for years and loved them even before i got the sim . The Friedrich is my favourite 109 besides the Emil and i prefer it over the Gustav .
Allies : None , i fly many allies plane during 1942 , F4f3's , P-40's , Yaks , Migs etc.. but none has my "true love" , although the P-40 is the one i fly the most (Pacific especially ) along the Wildcat

Ground attack : Stuka forever lol (aerial surgery)

1943 :
Axis : Bf-109 Gustav (2/6): you rarely saw Friedrich in 1943 cause production had stopped by mid-1942 . Fw-190 A5 is by far the best axis aircraft (fastest , toughest , better armed , best energy retention etc..) but my heart prefers the Willy Messerschmitt designs , so i stay faithful to the "good old 109".
Allies : P-51 B/C Mustang : love the Mustang , it's fast , it retains energy excellently , it's great for energy fighting , has good range and i find the Pony very pretty , i always fly it if i had the chance despite the awful rearward visbility and weak firepower (only 4 guns , but i use close range convergence of 120-130m and shoot at the last moment which helps me to take out 190 in one pass quite often )

Ground attack : guess what , Stuka again , nothing beats the satisfaction of making it home after divebombing accurately a very narrow warship on the move or a group of tanks about to pawn your troops while you managed to go through thick AAA and ennemy fighter cover . I like the SBD though , i fly it a lot but i find it a bit fragile

1944 :
Axis : My heart says Bf-109 methanols , my head says 190 Dora : I prefer to use the 109 on the Eastern front , but on the Western front , i need those superior high altitude and high speed performances of the Fw-190 Dora .
Allies : P-51 Mustang : My favourite Allied plane by a long shot (although i like the P-38 from time to time and enjoy flying late war Yaks for a change )

Ground attack : Stuka ... no comment http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

much more maneuverable then the f4 and I believe aven tested well against the early f-15 except for the f-15's superior radar/missile system.

In Il-2 probably the plane I love flying the most is the J2M, it's really lovely to fly. However my guess is that it's overmodeled in-game and a lot easier to fly and more maneuverable than its real-life versions.

P-38 Hands down. It is the best looking and I love it to bits! I love all the stuff it has going for it as well as it's downfalls, you can't truely love a plane just cos "It has 50 cal's and doesn't affriad of anything." You have to put up with the good and the bad. I don't know why I like the P-38 so much, I just do. I can't explain it. All you FW-190/ME-262/KI-84 etc lovers, try flying a plane, knowing it is undermodled in this sim and has advantages and disadvantages. Climb out of your ubar planes and fly everything you can. There's a plane out there waiting for you!

I've seen these threads before and the answers are always so shallow. I like plane X because it is good at X,Y,Z. That's not love! No substance! When you can fly plane X despite it being undermodled, underapretiated, slow, unmanouverable and made of tisue paper! When you climb into that cockpit time after time, getting shot down over and over! Then, come and tell me that you love this Plane!

"Me-262 HG-II becuase I can shoot down 22 average AI with it. Big Grin

Also becuase its fast and the most powerful aircraft on the game.

Plus it looks cool."

You don't know what our missing! Fly it against superior aircraft, flown by superior pilots! When you are one of the 22 geting killed time after time, then you can tell me if you love the 262! There is more to an aircraft then it's performance, you will know when the time comes ^_^

Lately greatly enjoying the P-40.

Very fond of planes with great climb rates, like the Zero and 109. Love the Mc 202, even if the guns stink. I"m also a big Spitfire fan, just love their beauty and love flying them, even when they are out of date.

I also like the Lagg3 and Yak 9 and 3. The P-38 is also great fun.
I do like the FW190 and esp. the Tempest. And of course the J2m Raiden.
I truly miss the Ki-44 an all time favorite of mine.
For bombers its the graceful Arado jets. And a silly affection for the He 162.
The common thing is just that I enjoy these planes even when I loose a dogfight. I suppose, my favorite planes I like to fly as energy fighters and then turn to kill. Even the Zeros I try to fly as energy fighters until pulling the stick hard for a quick kill.
Still, my Loves are irrational, planes that give me a sense of the magic of flight mean more to me than planes I can "win" a dogfight in.

This is true. I was hoping people would pick the planes they enjoy flying the most, not which planes are the best. (i really don't think there is a best plane)

I gravitate toward my choices because i get a better sensation of flight. Granted, i also like to win, but something is lost when every shot from a cannon explodes the enemy aircraft, or if i can turn on a dime repeatedly with no consequence, or stall behavior. Simply put, there are some planes that lean more toward video game than simulation, and for that reason i fly the planes that seem more real to me.

Ye gods! There's a plane for me to add to the ever-expanding list of drawing-board concepts I'd like to see modelled in a flight sim (e.g. a simulation of flight than models aerodynamics: Microsoft take note). I note too that like all the best planes, it uses balsa wood in its construction. If anyone else is interested see

In IL2 it has to be the Yak 3, not because it has the feel of the underdog about it, wooden bits and all. not because one thing that matters hugely to me is rear visibility and the Yak has a lovely cockpit for seeing out of! but because it has forgiven my ineptitude so many times when other planes would have buried me. Forgiveness is a wonderful quality in a person and in a plane!

Beyond ww2 the F15 is the absolute best expression of total air superiority to me. Have any of you seen the video of the Israeli pilot who flew one home with most of 1 wing missing? Awesome.

In IL2 has to be the Ta152H. Once you've accelerated up to speed (takes some time) your virtually untouchable if you stay high. Firepower is incredible and it has the best turn rate of any Focke Wolf. Its major drawback is the big wings. Also I like flying the Fw190D-9 and the D-13, best looking (to me anyway) of the 190 series. Provided you fly them with patience they're some of the most satisfying aircraft to get kills with.

F-18s

i grew up near an airbase (moffet field)
Every couple years the Blue Angles came to town and would fly. For about a week they were zooming over my house doing practice routines, and then i could actually watch the airshow by getting on the roof of the house.

So, for that reason, I've always been fond of the F-18. It has nothing to do with performance or combat.

My favourite plane is the Hurricane, I particularly like IIc model with the 4 cannons. They are decent (though not great) planes for the 1941 timeslot, and it is a pleasant plane to fly, with few vices. When I occasionally do manage to get someone in my sights, the 4 20mms are a delight to shoot with. More often though, I rely on the old kites ability to limp home even with major parts blown off. I fully understand why RAF retained them in far places long after their "best before" date had expired.

http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a37/Friendly_flyer/Skinning/image002.jpg

It's also a plane that is interesting to skin, as it has distinct and contrasting canvas and metal surfaces, and a fairly bening mapping.

I remember the lightning with great fondness. It was awesome in displays and I read a great book about a boy who loved it called "thunder and lightnings " by Jan Mark, which was read on the Tv show "Jackanory." I think the arrangement of the engines and the wing design give it a unique shape.
I also love the Buccanneer and the Saab viggen because both had innovative designs and were under-rated. The RAF used to have a song:
"faster, lower, lower longer.
Who will beat the Buccanneer?"
