More detail of an extraordinary career in the Telegraph (http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/main.jhtml?xml=/news/2007/04/13/db1302.xml).

<BLOCKQUOTE class="ip-ubbcode-quote"><div class="ip-ubbcode-quote-title">quote:</div><div class="ip-ubbcode-quote-content">"The AOC instructed that Duke was to finish his third tour after completing 486 operational sorties. He had destroyed 27 enemy aircraft, and probably three more, making him the RAF's outstanding and highest-scoring fighter pilot in the Mediterranean theatre. He was 22 years old and at the end of October he returned to England after an absence of three years. </div></BLOCKQUOTE>

Another good one gone. 7 kills in 7 days is quite an achevment.

I wounder why do the German ase's tend to have huge kill numbers, like in the 100's while most ailled ace's might only have scored in the 10's. Now, I know that the Germans racked up huge numbers of kills on the Russians in '41-'42, but even in the west the Germans seem to higher kills.......

German aces weren't rotated out of service like the allied aces, simple as that. They stayed in the cockpit until they died or made it to 1945. Even "average" aces are bound to rack up a few kills given enough time.

Robert S. Johnson was on a pace to overtake E. Hartmann.
