Does anyone know how many planes certain U-boat's may have shot down?

For instance we know the tonnage that specific U-boat commanders achieved, however do we know how many aircraft they destroyed...

E.g. 19 ships, for 64.769 tons... and 4 aircraft destroyed over 6 patrols...etc...

I guess I ask this as it would be interesting to see what commanders were prepared to fight it out on the surface with the AA defence or Crash dive your A'S'S' outta there.

What is your preference? I think im the type to give it a go with the AA... Then again that depends how many enemy planes are about and what the realism is like...

I know its a far our scenario, but I would love to be able to cripple a Sunderland Flying boat so that it has to land (calm seas). Then its at my mercy...haha! Finish her off with the Deck gun...Mwuuu ha ha ha ha http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/784.gif

No,but i know that 50% of u-boats were shot down by planes in the war!

shooting down an aiplane was very rare by uboats.. most commanders opted for a crash dive instead. knowing full well the risks of staying surfaced. most anti-sub aircraft were well equiped and had experienced pilots at the helm. most of them were flying boats, so they were also large in size and difficult to shoot down. AA or flak guns were a last line of defence, in a situation where its too late to crash dive.

I didn't realize that U-boats were capable of being shot down http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_razz.gif

Yes, if only they had come into operation sooner, things could have been very different for the allies http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-surprised.gif

i hope its not as easy to shoot planes down as it was in the video.....as they said the plane i think would be the Victor.

Well it doesnt even show the aircraft firing at the U-boat, so I assume they were set up just for the sole purpose of demonstrating the AA guns... The real gameplay will be like that of the trailer where the aircraft come down strafing the sub...

I was killed lot of times by aircrafts, specially when trying to shoot them down; now, whenever I can, my choice is crash dive and change course just after submerged.

Anyway, it should be fine to be credited for the lucky shoot against one of those bastards.

"There are more aeroplanes in the sea than there are submarines in the sky" - someone's sig, somewhere...

I saw a cut-away drawing of a Sunderland - those aircraft were amazing! They carried practically anything even tangentally useful to the aircraft, possibly even the kitchen sink! Amongst other stuff, they carried an armoury of .303 rifles, a small boat, tents, fishing apparatus, etc. And the way the ordnance was loaded is interesting - I think they were attached to the racks inside the aircraft, then winched outboard on a bicycle-chain apparatus! Thus giving flexibility to adjust depth charges manually, etc...

If you go to the website uboat net it will tell you every sub and how many aircraft they shot down.

Here (http://uboat.net/boats/u230.htm) is one i found while researching the boats in Werners book iron coffins. There were a few planes shot down by subs, infact the sub at liverpool only shot down a plane, it didnt get any ships lol. So you could say it was more successful at being an anti aircraft platform.

Late in teh war they would leave harbour in formation sometimes, 3 or more boats. That way their guns could concentrate fire and keep away enemy aircraft. I doubt this is in the game though.

Hope that helps

Here (http://uboat.net/boats/u415.htm) is a U-Boat which got 2 aircraft kills. Though in getting the first it had to go home for repairs http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_eek.gif

Here is a great story about a US airship lost to a U-boat off Florida... Great read...

125 aircraft shot down by 97 individual U-boats for the loss of 31 U-boats either sunk during the attack or due to being located by other forces shortly afterwards and sunk.
One source says that RAF Coastal Command (U-boat hunters) lost 700 aircraft (badly damaged, shot down and paid off - not all to U-boats of course) and sank 220 U-boats during the war. These figures show the immense effort put out by the British to hunt down the U-boats and almost all the aircraft successes took place in 1942 and later.

Well thats my question answered! I hadnt been able to find it on U-boat.net before now... http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

Are blimps modelled in the sim? It would be quite awesome if they were...

I don't think any game ever has featured a blimp...

The figures just go to show how suicidal it was to fight back against a plane. An average of only one plane shot down by each U-Boat that had any success against aircraft. I certainly won't be fighting back unless I have no choice. Having said that, it's yet to be shown that the game is realistic in this regard. It may be really easy to shoot down aircraft, and we might get tens of aircraft shot down per boat. I hope not, but it's possible.
