Hi all,

I'm an ESL teacher, a very serious one at that. Recently I've been focusing on listening comprehension and how to improve it quickly and effectively.

I've been doing a lot of reading on neurocognitive research and have imagined a new method of improving students' listening level in a very short time with very little effort.

I've tested this on a few students and have had great success but here's the problem: all my students are Chinese. If I want valid results I have to try this with people who speak other languages as their native tongue.

So, I had another idea. The General Discussion community is very international and diverse. I want to start a private topic and invite those who are sincerly interested in improving their listening level in a short time.

If you are interested please let me know in this thread. Simply post "I'm in" and when I open the thread you'll be invited. All are welcome. All levels are welcome.

I know many of you read and write much better than you speak and listen to English. For anyone learning a second language, other than English, you are also invited since this method is more about how we learn language rather than one just English. This method is universal and no matter what language you are studying, I promise you will see results.

Your participation will be greatly appreciated. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

I'd be very interested, assuming i have time, been very busy lately (that's why i couldn't properly participate in the religions and beliefs PT some time ago http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-sad.gif)

I've been also studying chinese lately, any tips with that? The pronounciation is killing me...

I would like be in. I have not been a very good pt'er with your other pt's. I hope I can join this one.

I am little dislectic and am not very good in language, even my own. Is that a problem? Or a challenge http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

I'm in. My school full of slack jawed mouth breathers still ask me things like "what do you like sport?" and "You are from?" despite the fact that they've been attending English classes 3 days a week for five years.

I'm in. I teach corporate classes in Japan and might be able to try some of the things out.
Sukebeboy - have you thought about doing corporate classes here (you're still in Japan I presume)? A bit of travelling a couple of days a week but the amount of time you have is great, students tend to be motivated and if you get the right agency/company then holidays can be good too.

Shocking lack of pleated skirts in corporate classes.

The problem is, in Asia you can't see an age difference between 13 and 23.

It's a trap. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

Even though English isn't my first language (Swedish & Finnish), I have lived a year in the USA so I might not represent the average Finnish skill level...

Well....what is it? Please tell me, I volunteered and I don't know http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/disagree.gif.

Anyway, wasn't it supposed to happen monday, I didn't see any PM ?

Pirschjaeger
02-14-2007, 06:48 PM
No problem Major, I only had to delay it.

ESL = English Second Language

My first idea was to do this with only those wanting to improve their English but then I thought it doesn't matter. This works for any language.

All are welcome

Well, I guess my reading comprehension level needs improvement, probably listening as well.

On the condition that this course/project is somewhat flexible (don't have to participate every single night, etc.) and that I will not experience any Algernon-like after-effects -

count me in.
