Wondered about that. Anyway, this works very smooth. I joined the VFC dedicated server and some other non ded servers through HL with no fuss at all. Thanks guys! /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

Well, really here it is and it seems that CrazyIvan managed this to work http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Here are "official" release notes:

http://wildhoney.nightmail.ru/il2fb

Maybe CrazyIvan will write an extensive Readme for that all, as I'm too lazy to do that and his English is better http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Ivan;

I had no probs following your instructions. It all worked well for me. I was able to join any server I wanted to on HL. Tried to connect to Ubi after reading the thread, to see what happened. The console pops up with the command "ready" in the window. Wouldn't go no further. Dosen't matter much to me. I play on HL, along with the squad I belong to, all the time anyway.

But if I ever wanted to play on Ubi, seems like all I would have to do is undo the changes I made per your instructions. I think really all I would have to do is rename the il2fb.exe back to the original and rename the server console back to the original. Just an educated or common sense guess.

But anyway, I thank you sir, for you and everyone else who has decided to work around this dedicated server prob, rather that to complain and do nothing. Although I do understand that a lot of my peers, including myself, wouldn't know how to do what you guys have done, so the only thing left for us to do is complain. LOL I certainly appreciate you though. You are an asset to this community! S!

Ok I got it up on Hyper let me know how it works out if you can. the only thing I found that you will need to do is when you rename your original exe. you will have to redirect your Desctop icon to it aswell for single play.

To do that in case you dont know, You right click desctop icon then choose properties then paste this in the target "C:\Program Files\Ubi Soft\IL-2 Sturmovik Forgotten Battles\il2fb_start .exe" hat is if you named origional the same as the example.

Or you could just create a new shortcut to desktop aswell.

Well off to bed.

Questions re the dedicated server.

Looking at Wildhoneys website it looks like we need to install the game on the dedicated servers, does this mean that we will only be able to run it using a box that has keyboard and mouse attached? ie not a true dedicated rackserver in a data house?

Will it work with fbdaemon?

Thanks for all the work you guys have done so far.

Why does the server need to have both the dedicated server and orginal game installed? This will cause issues for me due to the fact that all the servers i use are remote to me and i have no way of installing the orginal game. Is there w way to get around this and only have the dedicated server package installed. Seems like a waste of diskspace as well when you have both installed. Do you all plan on making it work with just the dedicated server package?

As far as i could see HL showed me as connected to the dedicated server all the time until i disconnected as normal. This should then mean that the dedicated servers will show up as populated in HL as long as ppl use "FBServer" to connect!?

The dedicated server does not need the game software also. All it needs is the server software.

Also if you have remote access to the server and are running the server with the console you do not need a monitor or keyboard. So you can have it on a rack mount in a data center as long as you have remote access to that machine. You can do everything remotely.

HyperLobby needs original game even when you host with dedicated server. Actually, it does not need the whole huge installation - it looks only for files named "il2fb.exe", "conf.ini" and Users folder. The rest can be removed if you do not want to waste space (i didn't test!).

If you don't use HyperLobby, then you don't need the original game.

Hey Tiger!

Open up windows explorer, navigate to C:\Program Files\Ubisoft\IL-2 Frogotten Battles folder.

il2fb.exe looks like a plane. Brown icon. In explorer it will show up as il2fb , without the .exe part.

Keep posting your questions here, i`m around.

For those who`s using both, Hyperlobby and UBI, written By Ares_22nd - Thanks mate.

1. Download the FBserver.exe and copy it to a folder in your IL2 dir. i used this.... c:\program files\ubi soft\il2 sturmovik forgotten battles\launcher . After you have it in the folder, rename it to il2fb.exe .

2. Renamed your orginal il2fb.exe to anything, like i used il2fb_temp.exe.

3. Start your HL client. Hit connect and it will say the exe for il2 is missing. Point it to the il2fb.exe in your /launcher folder.

4. Rename il2fb_temp.exe back to orignal il2fb.exe.

5. Now you can play on either Ubi or HL. without having to change the exe everytime. And also, you dont have to repoint your desktop icon to play single player.

************************************************** *********
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

I had to also go into the il2fb.exe in the launcher folder and reset the path back to il2fb.exe, but with everything all done it works like a charm, UBI or HL in Dedicated or non dedicated servers. . thanks guys!

"Also if you have remote access to the server and are running the server with the console you do not need a monitor or keyboard. So you can have it on a rack mount in a data center as long as you have remote access to that machine. You can do everything remotely."

Now that is fantastic news. We can have boxes running 24/7 on good pipes, watch out Telehouse.

Big thank you to all involved in making this work. Its times like this that I am so proud of communitites like ours.

I have DSL and one thing I've discovered is that you need to set your network tab in Setup to the right IP address or you'll time out when trying to connect to a game.

Before adding FB Launcher, HL worked fine if the IP under Network tab was "Default". Now I have to set it to my client IP address to connect to HL just the way I do for Ubi or ASE.

Got it working great in HL no problem. But now I want to use it in UBI too. Made a new folder in fb directory called launcher and placed the server file in it and renamed to il2fb.exe.

When i now try and join hl it can find the path so i copied and pasted the following location to the top line:

C:\Program Files\Ubi Soft\IL-2 Sturmovik Forgotten Battles\launcher

But it still won't find the location, am I doing something stupid ???

Ivan I edited these instructions a bit so people can see the file names.

1) If you don`t have UBI Game Service installed
Download it here: http://gamingzone.ubisoft.com/packages/GameService.exe Intall it and forget about it.

2) Download FBServer.zip from here. Thanks Mutt!!! http://www.rmutt.netfirms.com/FBServer.zip

And Unzip FBServer.zip into your IL-2 Forgotten Battles Folder.Located here:
C:\Program Files\Ubi Soft\IL-2 Sturmovik Forgotten Battles

3) Rename il2fb.exe in Forgotten Battles folder to il2fb_start

4) Double click on FBServer.exe in your IL2 Forgotten Battles folder.
The FBServer console will pop up. At the top, Click on Options and and select Preferences. Another Console will pop up. *** Do not touch the Server path ***

4a) At the bottom of the console where it says IL2-FB Game Path click "Locate" and select il2fb_start.exe
Click OK.

5) Rename FBServer.exe TO: il2fb.exe

Now your Done Go test it in normal & dedicated server In HL only. Have Fun !!!

PS> Crazy Ivan Not trying to step on yer toes mon just trying to make it a tad bit more clear for the not so computer savy.

Thx for all your efforts along with everyone who has made dedicated posible @ HL S^!!!

Fantastic http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif Great work and many thanks to all involved.

I have a dream: One day people will be able to remotely use a dedicated server and host coop missions from HL.

ie when you host at HL you can entre your remote ip address in the host preference menu.

My question is: Is there a way host a coop at HL after applying this Dedicated Server Dogfight client joinning fix without having to change back manually?

See section 2. on wildhoney's Step-by-step guide:
http://wildhoney.nightmail.ru/il2fb/

"You may also want to use batch file written by I/JG78_Willey that simplifies renaming game executables. It is available here."
http://wildhoney.nightmail.ru/il2fb/fb_rename.zip

From fb_server.bat readme:

Features:
- switches between game and server .exe
- shows existing il2fb executables, so you can check if it works right and which one is inactive ATM.

You'll see this when running the batch:

Il-2 FB Executable Choice
--------------------------------
1) Game
2) Server

9) il2fb*.exe check

0) EXIT

Please select, whether you want to use the game or server .exe.

Actually Hawgdog if you will do it this way.Below you wont have to rename it. But renaming it will work if you have it the old way. But I think if you play on UBI it will fight you but not sure on it. This method below will allow you to play on both Hyper and UBI. Thanks for the plug m8 /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

Your humble hosts spend so much time and effort to make FB more playable on line then it ever was, you are truly missing out on lagless, smooth environment!!!

Please take a look at those simple instrictions, it`s THAT EASY to be able to join BOTH, Dedicated and Non-Dedicated servers.

1. If you don't have UBI game service app installed, install that first. Can be found here http://gamingzone.ubisoft.com/packages/GameService.exe or on just about any game from UBIsoft.

2. Download the FBserver.zip package from http://www.rmutt.netfirms.com/FBServer.zip. Create a new folder in our IL2 FB dir and extract the file into it.

3. Open the file (doubleclick on it) and goto options/prefernces. In the bottom of the window, set the IL2-FB game path to il2fb.exe that is in your instal dir for IL2 FB. If you didnt change it durning your game installation, it will be C:\Program Files\Ubi Soft\IL-2 Sturmovik Forgotten Battles\il2fb.exe. Just click on the locate button and point it to this file.

4. Rename the FBserver.exe in your /launcher folder (or whatever you called it) to il2fb.exe

5. Start Hyperlobby. While clicking on the connect button, hold down Control - Shift. This will open another window that will allow you to change the location of il2fb.exe for your game. Change this to the newly installed launcher app. If you used the dirs i suggested, this will be C:\Program Files\Ubi Soft\IL-2 Sturmovik Forgotten Battles\launcher\il2fb.exe.

Big thanks to Ares_22nd for making instructions even easier!!

I have a dedicated server running without the main IL2FB game installed. Just the server package. I added the Users folder from another machine with the game installed and renamed the server folder to look like it was the game folder.

Seems to work just fine.

Also, I have been able to change maps by just changing the path in the server.cmd file. Even loads from different directories.

I found a slight bug in the fbserver and please this is not a poke or complaint, I appreciate having the fbserver.
I serve on a Win98SE and the 'stop server' command doesn't seem to kill the task. I had some fun trying to figure out what was happening. There were 9 il2server tasks running at once. The fun part was the first was the only one that was allowing logins. So it seemed that my changes were not having any effect. /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

But I have lost it LOL

Ive got hyper lobby going fine, when i click on a game it starts the ip joining widget, and I know which servers are dedicated as Ive seen the names mentioned in here and we are running one too. Where do I get the ip adress from to enter into the game joiner? I know our IP obviously but what are the ones for the [FAST] servers for example. Or am i missing something, do we not need to know the ip address now?

I wonder if HL would be able to figure out by itself weather the server is a dedicated one or not. Or maybe the person hosting could set a setting.

Then HL could start the default fb.exe or the special server exe by itself.
Would solve the renaming 'problem'
