View Full Version : Silly Question about Props versus Jets

Hey guys, I was reading the good thread going on about the fastest prop plane ever and came up with a silly question, which some of you WWII gurus will be able to answer:

Could a skilled pilot in a P-51H bring down someone in a Mig 15 ? To my novice mind, it seems like the P-51 could fill in for the Zero here and the Mig could fill in for the Corsair. If flown one on one (not using team tactics) a P-51H could out-turn a Mig I suppose and so it would be essentially a turner versus a boom and zoomer all over again. Despite the huge speed difference, could the P-51H fight and win ?

The only reason I am asking, is because I am usually able to bring jet fliers in IL2 down into turning contests with my prop plane and get them thru deflection shooting but I have no idea how this would actually work out in real-life.

If the MiG flier is stupid then yes it's possible.

P-51 may be able to go fast but it can't turn worth spit and go so fast at the same time.

aktually, it high speeds 450-500kmh the P51 turns just like a Spitfire...at least in the game
however with continius turning it will bleed off energy and eventually stall when it reaches 300 kmh.

A more realistic scenario is a P-63 and an Me262 in the game http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif The Me262 piloits are surprised that the P63 can catch the Me262 on a climb if they don't watch out http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Probably even a Fokker Eindecker could shoot down a MiG-25 under right conditions. (despite MiG-25's landing speed probably being twice as fast as Fokker's maximum dive speed http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif)

A Sea Fury pilot claimed two MiG-15's here (http://www.acig.org/artman/publish/article_306.shtml), and Corsair's got at least one, though the pilot was quickly shot down by the MiG's wingmen shortly afterwards (he survived the bailout unharmed) here (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/F4U_Corsair), and A-1 Skyraiders claimed two MiG-17's in the early days of the Vietnam war here (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A-1_Skyraider).

So it is possible for prop fighters to get the upper hand on faster jets, though that is the exception, rather than the rule. As for P-51's vs. MiG-15's, this story sheds some light on tactics to use, and those not to use here (http://www.koreanwar.org/html/units/frontline/biteman/biteman17.htm). It's no surprise that the 'Stang drivers thought about tactics for this possibility, and the storie's example of what happened when they weren't followed probably shows what happened in the majority of cases.

Yeah..maneuver-kill ("and then, he stalled..")

Then again, one quick pass and the Fokker's gonna be turned into an IKEA-cupboard by the Foxbat's jetwash http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/59.gif

He could end up like Immelman... it was quite dangerous when that synchronizing mechanism fails to work properly, first you shot off part of your propeller, then engine starts to ruin your structural integrity, and before you know it you lost aft part of your fuselage and you're spinning in the earth direction.
Nasty!

M_Gunz summarized it quite nicelyhttp://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/59.gif.

I got one in Mig Alley.Cutting the corner and deflection shots but it wasn´t easy.I wish they had update it as they did with BOB 2.It is an atmosphere in it I like.
