Joint Fighter Conference. What exactly went on at these little shin-digs between the minds of the Military, Engineers, Company Men and Pilots who were the shakers and movers of aviation in October-1944?

Well, I can't be bothered to run through the whole shooting match for you! But if you must know every little word said then buy the book yourself!

Suffice to say it is well worth the read.

For those of you who can't be bothered, this in a nutshell is what happened; Everybody who was anybody (This turns out to be the Americans and the British) all got together to take along hard look at what they had! (P-39, P-47, P-51, P-38, Corsair, Hellcat, P-61, P-63, XF8F-1, YP-59, Mosquito, Seafire and a Japanese Zero amongst others) After a while of everybody trying out what was available, they all sat down and talked about their like's and dislikes of what they had and what they didn't want, and what they wished they had in their idea of the next Fighter!

For each flight conference aircraft, a comment card was filled out by the pilot. What follows are two of the 19 odd a/c tested by the participants.

Make of them what you will.nearly 60 years will make no difference!

I'll post some more if you want, let me know?

Enjoy.

Thank you, SECUDUS.

Interesting stuff. They were a bunch of whiners and no one agreed there! Maybe we are not so different, after all... /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

I like that thing: "Uncomfortable" "Horrible" "Cramped" "Crowded" and after that... "Most comfortable British plane of the conference". /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

Man, after that, I don't want to ride a Spit no more...!

Mind you, there were only three British a/c present at the NAS Patuxent River conference...Mossey, Seafire and a Firefly! At that time of the War none could be classed as cutting edge designs, the US on the other hand, hung out their meat and two veg for all to see.

Have you seen the comments on the P-38. They weren't too confident with it, were they?

Anyway, it seems that this also was plagued with personal impressions.... Interesting indeed, for these guys were REAL WW2 pilots, so they know what they're talking. But they didn't agree, either... /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

Something else to bear in mind, most of the pilots only flew the birds that they were not familiar with...Sometimes first impressions can very often be very different from one of familiarity.
