..of using an infra-red LED with TrackIR.

I never could get it to work properly with those silver dots, it would lose the signal and lock-up continuously.

But with the LED it works wonderfully well and I'm really enjoying it now.

I'm having having to learn to shoot and land again with it, though.

But these are minor problems, thanks anyway./i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

Any basic electronics instructions on using LED's will do, just replace the standard LED's with IR LED's. Just remember you won't be able to see when it's on because IR light isn't visible. You may want to wire a low intensity visible light LED in parallel so you can tell when it's switched on.

There used to be a huge thread on SimHQ about this but my favourites link is dead now /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-sad.gif

It's a basic simple electrical circuit, like you must have made at school at some point.

Instead of passively reflecting the IR emitted by the TrackIR sensor, the IR LED provides a much brighter active IR source, which makes it all work much better, for obvious reasons./i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

Greetings.
If you build one of these devices, you might look in your local electronic store for an Infared Detector Card.
This is a neat little thing no bigger than a credit card and has no electrical parts. It's passive but when you shine an IR source at it it lights up. Probably costs a couple of bucks at most. We use them to check out IR limit switches and the like.

I'd rather have a bottle in front of me than a frontal lobotomy.

Does it light up in the visible spectrum, or the IR?

If IR that would make a GREAT transceiver. Well, maybe too huge for the TrackIR to distinguish movement on, but still.

I went to a hobby shop and got a piece of plastic tubing the same diameter as the led.I also am using a spare usb port to power the led (and appropiate resistor).I ran the wires through the tube and stuck the led in the end.I then mounted the plastic tube to the top of my headset(with a rubberband).

Works great.

I went to Radio Shack and got an infra red detector card to make sure it was working.I can now use it in the dark.

Yes it is, when you can get it to work properly.

Infra-red LEDS ensure that happens./i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

I just connected the LED circuit to a 3 volt mains transformer and it works even better now.

It gives a very clear and strong IR signal.

Which is nice./i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif
