View Full Version : I was wrong, you can kill a Yak!

To all those i mislead with my earlier rant that it was just about impossible to kill a Yak unless you drove it into a mountain, i apologise.
I present here evidence that proves me wrong...

1:1 with a Yak in a Bf109F-4, slightly injured him in the unimportant bits
http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y117/blakduk/Killing%20Yaks/DeadYak01.jpg

Light cannon hit in the right wing to slow him downhttp://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y117/blakduk/Killing%20Yaks/DeadYak02.jpg

Some more peripheral damage to slow down his manouvershttp://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y117/blakduk/Killing%20Yaks/DeadYak03.jpg

Get him into a rolling scissors to get a better angle on his engine/cockpithttp://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y117/blakduk/Killing%20Yaks/DeadYak04.jpg

I honestly think these Russian engines were made of solid granitehttp://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y117/blakduk/Killing%20Yaks/DeadYak05.jpg

Again into the rolling scissors to hit him from the other side... just to show that both sides are almost invulnerablehttp://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y117/blakduk/Killing%20Yaks/DeadYak06.jpg

A quick zoom past and the silly sod tries to follow me in a climb, when he's taken so many hits alreadyhttp://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y117/blakduk/Killing%20Yaks/DeadYak07.jpg

At least he's slowed down enough for me to easily turn back around behind his wingline, and try to take his wing offhttp://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y117/blakduk/Killing%20Yaks/DeadYak08.jpg

The wings must be bolted on with something the space-shuttle could certainly usehttp://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y117/blakduk/Killing%20Yaks/DeadYak09.jpg

At least he's slow enough now to line up with easehttp://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y117/blakduk/Killing%20Yaks/DeadYak10.jpg

The pilots were noted for their lightning reflexes and ability to dodge shrapnelhttp://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y117/blakduk/Killing%20Yaks/DeadYak11.jpg

The trick is to line him up for a long burst from close rangehttp://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y117/blakduk/Killing%20Yaks/DeadYak12.jpg

But if you keep firing for long enough you will eventually be able to see evidence of damagehttp://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y117/blakduk/Killing%20Yaks/DeadYak13.jpg

Which will get progressively worsehttp://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y117/blakduk/Killing%20Yaks/DeadYak14.jpg

Yet he will still be able to fly with only minimal impairmenthttp://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y117/blakduk/Killing%20Yaks/DeadYak15.jpg

He will be going quite slowly though (all that lead you put on him must be quite heavy)http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y117/blakduk/Killing%20Yaks/DeadYak16.jpg

Does anyone remember that game where you had to remove skewers from a pile that was holding up marbles? For some reason i'm reminded of that game...http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y117/blakduk/Killing%20Yaks/DeadYak17.jpg

If you take very careful aim you can make the Yak look like a furry caterpillarhttp://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y117/blakduk/Killing%20Yaks/DeadYak18.jpg

But don't overdo it!http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y117/blakduk/Killing%20Yaks/DeadYak19.jpg

They are mortal after allhttp://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y117/blakduk/Killing%20Yaks/DeadYak20.jpg

And there we have it, proof that you can kill a Yak with the ammunition the 3rd Reich provided http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gifhttp://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y117/blakduk/Killing%20Yaks/DeadYak21.jpg

Odd, I kill Yaks with a Ki-43-1a in only 3 rounds. Rookie?

No, just a lousy shot http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/35.gif

The Yaks are good target practice though, now when i fly against other fighters, such as Spitfires and Hurricanes, it only takes a couple of hits and they fall apart

It should be working- are you ensuring that you hit 'save' before closing the conf file?

Another solution might be to use Il2 Shturmovik Stab which you can get here-
http://www.users.on.net/~mjtm/IL-2/ (http://www.users.on.net/%7Emjtm/IL-2/)

I use that to start my game and under the 'options' tab there is a tickbox to indicate if you want Arcade mode to come on. I highly recommend it, i have it set up to start everything i want to load when i start the game such as VAC and the TrackIR.

You just need the right plane for Yak hunting.

Yes you are wrong, you kan kill a Yak...

so here we are, cruising in a F-4 (tried with F2 as well with similar result)...
http://f19vs.se/temp/yak01.jpg

...and spot a Yak7...

http://f19vs.se/temp/yak02.jpg

... ops PK after a short burst. Hmm sure I got him but that doesn't prove the structural strength we were talking about, so...

http://f19vs.se/temp/yak03.jpg

another cruise....

http://f19vs.se/temp/yak04.jpg

with same planeset...

http://f19vs.se/temp/yak05.jpg

ops, first burst missed, just two bullets hit, we shouldn't expect him explode after that result... so try again....

http://f19vs.se/temp/yak06.jpg

...4 or 5 hits, and his left wing looks like Swiss cheese and breaks off.... YES you can take down a Yak, easily.

Try with Ju88 or 87 rear gunner. Type gunstat after you're done if you make it somewhow. It will very probably count in hundreds. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif Trick is, VVS planes don't have any engines. It's some zen Sun Tzu thing. It's so perfect it doesn't exist in material plane any more. Or something. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

We definitely need a gunstat count....then send this stuff to OM for evaluation

again.. broke off a yak's wing with an f4 with 4-5 bullets. No need for a count

Look, blakduk. Yes, you need to hit him a lot. But you can't expect to hit him all over and do concentrated damage. Pick a spot and shoot it repeatedly with MG and Cannon. Fire on that concentrated spot gives you a kill, not blasting it all over from direct 6.

It seems you people missed that he hit the Yak`s engine, direct hit.IL2 yaks are famous for the engine part.

Bullets? Force is indeed strong within you. Only bullets that cut wings off I'm aware of are the 12.7mm UBs... Do a test. Take Ju88, turn invulnerability on and have ai VVS things attack you. Jak, mig, LaGG, whatever. And enjoy yourself. Maybe unlimited ammo would help too http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

If by bullets you meant 20mm shells, than 4-5 hits just about anywhere would be enough, and 4-5 hits in the wing breaking the wing off aren't that great a result.

Dig the amount of arrows passing through the cockpit.

Looks like VVS pilots are made out of delta wood, also http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Something i have discovered recently- if i hit any plane and chop a wing off etc they will tumble from the sky no problem. With most planes if i turn them into swiss cheese they will eventually tumble into the ground- unless they are a Yak with the set to 'Ace' AI.
It seems they can trim the plane to do the impossible- if they are turned down to 'veteran' they are quite easy to destroy http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Try your guns.

the engines on the yak tend to cut power to that of a 2cv when hit.

it doesnt belch oil etc like other engines, but it can barely fly http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif
