View Full Version : "Forgotten Site" anyone? ;)

A long time ago, in a forum far far away... Guys used to post many interesting links to Pacific air war related sites. Amongst them there was a link to the site containing "reprint" of wartime air combat guide written by a few famous 5th Air Force veterans, for novice pilots just learning how to do their job on PTO.
A mix of short separate articles (one from each ace), kinda "Tips and Tricks" stuff: offensive and defensive tactics, strenghts and weaknesses of the enemy planes etc. (I remember they mostly adressed the importance of flying and fighting as a team - pilot without a wingman is a dead pilot, period) It was written about 1944 or early '45, the authors were mainly Lightning pilots and at least one Jug driver as well.
It was a good read, unfortunately I lost the link during an "Highly Unfortunate Partition Table Incident" a long time ago http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif. Don't remember If I got it from this board or the sim-outhouse one (good ol' CFS2 times http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif), but maybe someone of You knows what I'm talking about and has this adress bookmarked somewhere...

If You do, I'll owe You a beer for that http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_cool.gif.

Cheers - Art

You can buy the book for that as well,
"Twelve to one"
V Fighter Command Aces
Of the Pacific
ISBN: 1 84176 7840
Osprey publishing
Was the link tailspins for the web site?

Here in Poland, importing books from Osprey is pain in the... uhm known place http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif, and the ones that are available in special bookshops and modeller shops cost a fortune. That's why I'm looking for the easier solution in the first place.
I don't know if the articles on the site were excerpts from this particular book. Nevertheless, the title sounds very interesting, I'm going o take a closer look at this option as well.
Thanks for the tip.

Cheers - Art

Art-J, what is the procedure if someone here in the States buys the book (for you) and sends it to you, can you send a paypal payment or something like that? Or maybe trade me for a similar priced book (from Poland, that I can't get here) on WWII fighters?

Targ: I'm not sure if this is the one, because I havent read it yet (32 pages! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/metal.gif) but it looks very similar. This lecture, or at least part of it, might be included in the aforementioned site I once saw. I'm impressed by effort You have put into creating this pdf http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif, enjoy it already and I'm sure other folks will do as well. Big "Thanks" for this one!

Skeet2k5: from my point of view the idea of Paypal sounds good, but there are always some wicked "catches". Either virtual bookstores/portals refuse to send/receive goodies to/from "wild east" http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif (e.g. Amazon), or I cannot use my type of debit card to enjoy Paypal. On the other hand, at the moment I don't intend to get a full-blown fancy credit card just for shopping over the net, because my ratio of rare shopping activity Vs. monthly bank costs of having such a card would make the whole affair a little un-profitable http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/53.gif.
The crazy-result of this situation is: I've got the money, but It's easier to rape a hamster than spend them on getting foreign books!
Thanks for Your attention anyway, mate.

Cheers - Art

P.S. - I would officially like to contradict any suspicions about my physical or psychical relations to any type of hamsters.

Cool link , went to the "visuals" section - very nostalgic to see the old CFS2 once again.
How things have changed - still; had great times back in those days too.

RIGHT http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/10.gif Now we know who's been sending Hammy those "provacative" emails.

Thanks for the McGuire material, Targ. Read about him but haven't yet read anything he wrote himself.
