S! all...Just wondering if there is any way of controling the bombsight of the He-111 or the Tb-3 when on autopilot, cause it quite hard flying the bomber and controling the bombsight at the same time.
Thx

A10, go into the Controls Setup, and assign a key for "Level Stabilizer".

This will fly the plane level, while allowing you to control the throttle, flaps, trim, AND the bombsight! /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

A note about the stabilizer, though: Watch your slip indicator and variometer. You may have to use a lot of elevator trim, even with the Level Stabilizer on, to get the plane to fly perfectly level. Just keep an eye on the variometer.

Sounds a bit wierd, but that's the way it works. /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif Once you disable the Level Stabilizer, be careful your plane does not get away from ya. All of that trimming you did to get it to fly level with the Stabilizer enabled, will now be felt in the stick.

As for the slip, you can correct that with rudder trim, and it seems to work quite normally, unlike the elevator trim, when the Level Stabilizer is enabled.

This is a great tool when on He-111 bombing runs. You'll be able to steer the plane with rudder trim, until you're perfectly aligned with your target. It's the closest thing we'll ever get to a Norden bombsight. /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

BPond, first of all thanks. All this time I had level autopilot confused with level stabilizer. That helps tremendously. Some points to know that you didn't post about. Once you enable that bombsight automation, the plane's gonna drop its bombs, regardless of whether you cancel it or not. Also, the trim works much slower than usual while on level stabilizer, and I've found it easier to adjust airspeed to get that last bit settled down to a perfectly straight and level. I don't know, but suspect, that the bombs dropping on bombsight automation even after cancelling it may be a bug. I can't imagine that you only get one shot at it. The weapons shouldn't drop unless the automation is on at the actual time of release. I tested it by setting and then immediately cancelling automation, but the plane still dropped them. Also, I noticed that sometimes if you go to the bombsight, all of the lines and markers are absent. If you cycle back through the pilot view, it comes back, but sometimes I have to cycle it a coupla times. This is definately not supposed to happen. I wonder if anyone has reported this before in ORR? You were spot on about the rudder trim. With just a little bit of foresight, you can get the Heinkel (or TB3) dead on target. Your comment has finally given me the chance to become very proficient at bombing... now if I only had a printer to print out the true vs indicated airspeed chart!!!

Is there a web page that I can vist to get a detailed briefing on how to set up and make a bomb run. I just can't seem to get it right.

The bombsight numbers disappear when you change direction or bank more than 4 degrees (documented in the manual and in the training track). It reappears after flying straight and level again.

If you haven't watched the training track of the He111 on a bomb then do so. Answers about 75% of the questions that keep popping up.

A10, somewhere on your 2nd IL-2 CD, is a PDF file with an IAS/TAS chart. /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif
