View Full Version : What's the problem with the MiG-9 engines?

Hi!

I've had 46 for a while now, but never really gotten into flying the planes that followed it.

So I set up a quick mission with me in a MiG-9 against 4 B-29's at 5000 meters. Push the throttle to around 95%. Then, as I close in on the bombers, problems arise: Every time I push the triggers, an engine quit! First the left one. Got that one restarted. New pass at the bombers. The right engine quits. Get it restarted. New burst with my guns. Now the left engine quits, and this time it won't restart. I try at 95% and 80% throttle, but to no avail. I still have enough energy to make another pass at the bombers, and this time the right engine quits again. It won't restart either! I glide back to base with one bomber shot down, one burning and one damaged in the tail...

Why does one engine quit when I fire the guns? I was flying fairly straight and level, at about 450km/h and 5000m.
Why am I not able to restart each engine more than once?

Anyone who knows?

So I set up a quick mission with me in a MiG-9 against 4 B-29's at 5000 meters. Nice cold war scenario

Push the throttle to around 95%. Then, as I close in on the bombers, problems arise: Every time I push the triggers, an engine quit! Large cannon is producing much smoke that gets sucked in engine and engine quits

First the left one. Got that one restarted. New pass at the bombers. The right engine quits. Get it restarted. New burst with my guns. Now the left engine quits, and this time it won't restart. I try at 95% and 80% throttle, but to no avail. You probably do not have enough airspeed to restart

I still have enough energy to make another pass at the bombers, and this time the right engine quits again. It won't restart either! Bad thing

I glide back to base with one bomber shot down, one burning and one damaged in the tail... Still a good job!

Why does one engine quit when I fire the guns? I was flying fairly straight and level, at about 450km/h and 5000m. Like I said they suck

Why am I not able to restart each engine more than once? I can restart it as many times as you like

Anyone who knows? Notice that you have two engines, so first select right - press CTRL+I then select left engine and press CTRL+I. You can move your throttle to 110% while doing so, just make sure that you get "engine: starting" message

Here's your track if you need it - MiG-9 in action (http://www.speedyshare.com/190429199.html)

Thanks for your kind and amazingly thorough reply! As I'm at work rigt now, I don't have the ability to watch your track.

I was aware of the fact that jet-engines suck. They kind of allways do that. Unless they have stopped, that is. But I thought they could inhale a little smoke without dying completely..

Did you have to restart your engine all the time? By the way; the speed I had as I was trying to restart was between 350 and 500 km/h. Tried with several throttlesettings as I was gliding away from the bombers.

4 B-29's in one flight? I'm impressed! Looking forward to see your track tonight!

Note engine(s) will quit only when firing big NS37 gun. You can use 23mm NS23 guns without restrictions. IRL pilots were prohibited from using the big gun above 3km.

This time I didn't check the Readme since IIRC it was posted here before I got the disk,
isn't there some notes about Mig-9 and what alt not to use the 37mm above right there?

Oh no, it's easier to start a thread....

It's in the plane guide.

I was aware of the fact that jet-engines suck. Trouble is this one sucks cannon exhaust

But I thought they could inhale a little smoke without dying completely.. If you fire only a few 37mm rounds at one time, and fly at high speed they probably wont quit you can fire 20mm on your likings they have 0% impact on your engine

Did you have to restart your engine all the time? No.... I'd use only 23mm's but trouble is I have too few of them! Only 160 per cannon

By the way; the speed I had as I was trying to restart was between 350 and 500 km/h. Tried with several throttlesettings as I was gliding away from the bombers. Note that you must select specific engine; eg. engine no.1 then engine no.2 then you can re-select them ("select all engines" key) to operate both at the same time - trouble is, you must map your keys for these functions

4 B-29's in one flight? I'm impressed! Looking forward to see your track tonight! This is the single toughest QMB setup I've ever played.... and I played a lot of them! to destroy 4 B-29's with MiG-9FS on "realistic" settings, let alone to do it on 7,500m and land, all that all under 10 mins!

It's even worse than that, 160 overall, 80 per cannon.

Jet engines tend to stall when ingesting gun-gasses.
That even happened with early F-4Es (small gun blast diffusers). MiG-21F-13s even flamed out when AA2 "Atoll" missiles were fired (got that from an east-german MiG driver).

Thatswhy gun-gasses are vented past/ around engine suction-zones on most planes.

However, with a 37mm gun right in front of your intakes doing so might be kind of a problem.
Thatswhy keep your fingers off the 37-trigger above 3km http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

Well, it is not easy to keep from squeezing that 37mm trigger when a big fat Superfortress is filling your reticle, and you know you only have a second or so before the moment has passed!
I think I'll keep on loosing an engine..
Just got to figure out why I didn't succeed in restarting the engines more than once on each side.

80 Shells per cannon!!

And there's two cannons!!!

Sweet!!

My Cobra only has one cannon and it carries 30 shells.

It's all relative http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

I don't get it to download properly..
It says the filesize is 3,67Mbm but it stops at 960kb, telling Download successfull or something... The 960kb track doesn't work for me. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-sad.gif

Okay, DKoor, I gotta ask: how the Sam Hill did you land that thing on a parking ramp at that speed and stop it so quickly? Ueber brakes? http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/35.gif

Don't know.... MiG-9 apparently has large fuselage, and my controls were heavily damaged as you could see... now thing is I had to land my rather "intact" MiG in 10 min timeframe! At least not to crash it! So since I did not have the time for another landing attempt I decided to take my chances with wheel up landing. With gears down I would have "overshoot" the runway and probably crashed. This way I succeeded! MiG had uber decelerating rate because of this. But it was sooo risky maneuver. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_cool.gif

It was a small competition where pilot needs to destroy 4 X B-29 with MiG-9FS in QMB under 10 mins and land too on top of that.
Both B-29's and I took 50% fuel IIRC http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif
B-29's are on ACE level BTW.
Everything just max hard http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/35.gif

It is extremely hard. Extremely!

Ok, I've seen the track! I am impressed! But you had quite a luck with that first pass..

Nice, close shave on that last attack!

I just flew the mission again, and something strange happened: On my first attack I got badly shot up; the left engine started to burn, the ailerons quit and the 2 of the 3 cannons got damaged. I made a gentle turn, and charged at the bombers again. As I closed in on them, they didn't shoot! So I could expend the last rounds in one of the 23mm cannons peacefully, as I was trailing them.
Maybe they thought I was allready dead?

Ah, I didn't realize you hadn't dropped the gear. Now that I think about it the indicators were red; d'oh! I only watched from the cockpit view or it would have dawned on me.

OK since you liked the track I give you another one, same setup; but in this one I actually landed with wheels down; also heavily damaged MiG:

Nice work man...wish I could hit things with a 37mm. I have trouble hitting air with those things...
