View Full Version : How come sometimes I sink a ship and don't get credit for it?

I hit a small tanker with one torpedo and could clearly see that it was going to sink after a few minutes. It was leaning very far to one side and water was coming onto the deck. So, instead of plugging another torpedo into it...I just killed my engines and waited. I hit time compress for a few seconds and over she went. But...there was no "Enemy Unit Destroyed" message. I checked my log...nope. It was as though it just sunk on it's own and I had nothing to do with it. What gives?

Maybe was a neutral ship. But you still having to get the message "Neutral Unit Dstroyed". Like a bug it looks!

Because you are saving the game once you have fired the torpedo and it hasn`t hit the target. Its a Bug.

It was definitely an enemy ship, not a neutral one. And I didn't save the game after I fired the torpedo but before it hit. This has happened a few times.

Just save the game after the ship has sank then you don't have to worry about losing the credit for it.

I am never given credit for the sinking in the first place. The ship goes down as if I had nothing to do with it.

I a way your right, "You had nothing to do with it"!

Reason:
If the ship is hit by a torp, but not sunk and it only lowers/tilts it enough to eventually succome to the waves, it will be counted as sunk by nature not by man. It's a current game flaw, IMHO.

Kinda like when the PT boats sink, on their own, due to the large waves, in stormy weather. Although I believe this was addressed by the 1.2 patch IIRC.

The best way to avoid this issue, is to always finish off the enemy ship, just like the U-Boat commanders did IRL. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

I've been credited for "sunken by waves" kills. It always gives me credit if I'm the last one to attack it. Once had an escort "finish" one of my kills after spotting me. Dang kill stealing Canadians!

Are you sure?

You better revisit this, as it has been discussed at length in other posts.

There is no such credit for "sunken by waves kills" in the game at present. The ship either sinks due to your damage, which is usually relatively soon, or it only gets damaged and lists, until possibly sunk by nature (which will take a really long time).

If it is the latter and not the former, and it eventually sinks, usually after a really long duration, it is calculated by the game, as sunk due to the waves, because of it's increased draft, not due to your previous damage. Just as if an undamaged PT boat was sunk, due to heavy seas, prior to 1.2 patch.

Therefore, the game does not take into account a ship damaged by the player, which sinks later, due to its draft/listing and the waves. Hence you will never get a "Target destroyed" message.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong?

Just sank a destroyer. Well actually he rammed me as I was diving, then he rolled over and went down. No credit for that.

Same thing has happened to me. I sunk a T3 and got nothing for it. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/51.gif Just another bug is my guess.

I would assume that it is a fairly common occurence that ships are damaged and not sunk, e.g., last torpedo, escort attack, etc.

I think the game should be modified to give credit for damage done to ships. In real life, damaging a ship was very worthwhile. The cargo was often destroyed by flooding and the ship had to wait months for repairs.

Happy hunting!

It is a small odd bug that happens rarely.

I sunk a C2 Cargo heading north from the English Channel choke point and no matter how bad I killed it, I never got credit.

I could go and sink another one with no problem. This only happened to me twice in over 150 kills.

Yes. As I said, every ship that I attacked that eventually sunk and wasn't damaged by any other things like escorts or aircraft I got credit for. And yes, I have seen aircraft drop bombs ON friendly ships in their attempts to find/sink me. I've even seen a DD hit another DD with hedgehogs AND k-charges.

Anyway, I've been credited with a T3 30 minutes after the last torp hit. And there were really high waves. Maybe I'm just lucky and have managed to hit the fine line of fatal/non-fatal attack every time with no room for error, or maybe I'm not stalking my "damaged" victims as long as you all are. Whatever it is, I've not experienced this kill bug.

I hit and sank a costal merchant, took 2 minutes to go down. Could have used the DG.

Its listed in the log, but there no icon on the map for it. This has happened several times, but on different missions.

Ok, this si getting weird. I just GOT credit for sinking a Corvette that went down in rough seas...that I never touched! Not one torp or deck gun shot. All of a sudden I get the Enemy Unit Destroyed message and the icon on the map. I hope they square this away in the next patch.

I`m sure thats what I said. OK let me try again. If you save the game whilst the torpedo is running toward the target i.e. After its fired, in the middle of its run or just before it hits. Basically if the torpedo has left the tube and in the water DO NOT SAVE GAME. Either save it before firing or after the hit.
