I can only think of two songs off hand: "Aces High" by Iron Maiden and "me262" by Blue Oyster Cult. Can anyone think of any others?

chorus: Give me operations way out on some lonely atoll
For I am too young to die; I just want to grow old

Don't give me a P-38; the props, they counter-rotate
She's smattered and smitten from Burma to Britain
Don't give me a P-38

CHORUS

Don't give me a P-39; the engine is mounted behind
She'll tumble and roll, and she'll bore a deep hole
Don't give me a P-39

CHORUS

Don't give me a Peter-four-oh; it's a hell of an airplane, I know
A ground-looping BASTAGE , you're bound to get plastered
Don't give me a Peter-four-oh

CHORUS

Don't give me an old Thunderbolt; she gave many pilots a jolt
It looks like a jug, and it flies like a tug
Don't give me an old Thunderbolt

CHORUS

Don't give me a P-51; the airplane that's second to none
She'll loop, roll and spin, but she'll auger you in
Don't give me a P-51

Oh, there ain't no fighter pilots down in Hell
There ain't no fighter pilots down in Hell
The place is full of queers, navigators, bombardiers
And there ain't no fighter pilots down in Hell

A bomber pilot's life is just a farce
A bomber pilot's life is just a farce
The autopilot's on, he's reading comics in the john
A bomber pilot's life is just a farce

Oh, there ain't no fighter pilots in Japan
No, there ain't no fighter pilots in Japan
Cause they're all across the bay getting shot at every day
There ain't no fighter pilots in Japan

There ain't no fighter pilots up at TAC
There ain't no fighter pilots up at TAC
The place is full of brass sitting around on their fat ***
And there ain't no fighter pilots up at TAC

There ain't no fighter pilots in the States
There ain't no fighter pilots in the States
They're all on foreign shores making mothers out of *****s
And there ain't no fighter pilots in the States

There ain't no Navy pilots in the fray
No, there ain't no Navy pilots in the fray
They're in Hollywood out west doing what they do best
There ain't no Navy pilots in the fray

Oh, there ain't no fighter pilots down below
No, there ain't no fighter pilots down below
They're all way up above drinking whiskey, making love
There ain't no fighter pilots down below

Oh, there ain't no fighter pilots down in Hell

Speaking of the Animals, that song, "We've got to get out of this place" that's accompanies the soundtrack of the heli-assault on the Ashau Valley in "Hamburger Hill" absolutely chills me to the bone.

Not exactly about combat, but 'Five miles out' by Mike Oldfield is interesting for simming:

"What Do You Do When You're Falling,
You've Got 30 Degrees And You're Stalling Out?
And It's 24 Miles To Your Beacon;
There's A Crack In The Sky And The Warning's Out.

Don't Take That Dive Again!
Push Through That Band Of Rain!

Five Miles Out,
Just Hold Your Heading True.
Got To Get Your Finest Out.
You're Number 1, Anticipating You.

Climbing Out.
Just Hold Your Heading True.
Got To Get Your Finest Out.
You're Number 1, Anticipating You.

Mayday! Mayday! Mayday!
Calling All Stations!
This Is Golf-Mike-Oscar-Victor-Juliet
Imc Cu.nimb...Icing,
In Great Difficulty, Over.

The Traffic Controller Is Calling,
"Victor-Juliet Your Identity.
I Have You Lost In The Violent Storm!
Communicate Or Squawk 'Emergency'!"

Don't Take That Dive Again!
Push Through That Band Of Rain!

Lost In Static 18,
And The Storm Is Closing In Now.
Automatic 18!
(Got To Push Through!) Trapped In Living Hell!

Your A Prisoner Of The Dark Sky,
The Propeller Blades Are Still!
And The Evil Eye Of The Hurricane's
Coming In Now For The Kill.

Our Hope's With You,
Rider In The Blue.

Welcome's Waiting, We're Anticipating
You'll Be Celebrating, When You're Down And Braking.

Climbing Out.
(Climbing, Climbing)
Five Miles Out.
(Climbing, Climbing)

Five Miles Out,
Just Hold Your Heading True.
Got To Get Your Finest Out...
(Climbing, Climbing)"

But, to be sincere, I usually fly with the epic choir of Rameau's opera, 'Dardanus', in my head:

"Mars, Bellone, guidez nos coups;
dieux des combats, protgez-nous."

("Mars, Bellona, lead our hits;
gods of the fight, protect us")

http://www.airforce.ru/songs/mp3/song_16.mp3

http://www.airforce.ru/songs/mp3/song_17.mp3

http://www.airforce.ru/songs/mp3/song_63.mp3

I am very disappointed that no one has made mention of "Snoopy vs the Red Baron at Christmas". It's the most accurate tale of WW1 combat you'll ever hear.

PS:Not 100% sure if that's the songs correct name, as I've only heard it on the radio.

Snoopy versus the Red Baron , by the Royal Guardsmen:

After the turn of the century
In the clear blue skies over Germany
Came a roar and a thunder men had never heard
Like the scream and the sound of a big war bird

Up in the sky, a man in a plane
Baron von Richthofen was his name
Eighty men tried, and eighty men died
Now they're buried together on the countryside

Ten, twenty, thirty, forty, fifty or more
The Bloody Red Baron was rollin' up the score
Eighty men died tryin' to end that spree
of the Bloody Red Baron of Germany

In the nick of time, a hero arose
A funny-looking dog with a big black nose
He flew into the sky to seek revenge
But the Baron shot him down - "Curses, foiled again!"

Ten, twenty, thirty, forty, fifty or more
The Bloody Red Baron was rollin' up the score
Eighty men died tryin' to end that spree
of the Bloody Red Baron of Germany

Now, Snoopy had sworn that he'd get that man
So he asked the Great Pumpkin for a new battle plan
He challenged the German to a real dogfight
While the Baron was laughing, he got him in his sight

That Bloody Red Baron was in a fix
He'd tried everything, but he'd run out of tricks
Snoopy fired once, and he fired twice
And that Bloody Red Baron went spinning out of sight

Ten, twenty, thirty, forty, fifty or more
The Bloody Red Baron was rollin' up the score
Eighty men died tryin' to end that spree
of the Bloody Red Baron of Germany

Ten, twenty, thirty, forty, fifty or more
The Bloody Red Baron was rollin' up the score
Eighty men died tryin' to end that spree
of the Bloody Red Baron of Germany

Snoopy's Christmas , by the Royal Guardsmen:

O Tannenbaum, o Tannenbaum, [Oh Christmas tree, Oh Christmas tree]
du kannst mir sehr gefallen! [Of all the trees most lovely]

The news had come out in the First World War
The bloody Red Baron was flying once more
The Allied command ignored all of its men
And called on Snoopy to do it again.

Twas the night before Christmas, 40 below
When Snoopy went up in search of his foe
He spied the Red Baron, fiercely they fought
With ice on his wings Snoopy knew he was caught.

Christmas bells those Christmas bells
Ring out from the land
Asking peace of all the world
And good will to man

The Baron had Snoopy dead in his sights
He reached for the trigger to pull it up tight
Why he didn't shoot, well, we'll never know
Or was it the bells from the village below.

Christmas bells those Christmas bells
Ringing through the land
Bringing peace to all the world
And good will to man

The Baron made Snoopy fly to the Rhine
And forced him to land behind the enemy lines
Snoopy was certain that this was the end
When the Baron cried out, "Merry Christmas, my friend"

The Baron then offered a holiday toast
And Snoopy, our hero, saluted his host
And then with a roar they were both on their way
Each knowing they'd meet on some other day.

Christmas bells those Christmas bells
Ringing through the land
Bringing peace to all the world
And good will to man

Iced Earth - Red Baron/Blue Max

The son of a major, Prussian nobleman
His name bestowed by a holy Roman
The war broke out, so he looked to the air
24 hours of training and he was there

100 miles an hour
Top speed his plane would fly
And if he flew behind you
You know you're sure to die
Eighty kills, that are confirmed
While other pilots have so much more to learn

Red Baron...Blue Max
The albatross flies high
Red Baron...Blue Max
He's got you in his sights

The Red Battle Flyer, Red like fire
He sees' no faces, he's the ace of aces

His british quarry flew a reckless flight
A shot from the ground took the red baron's life
He flew with honor, he flew with pride
In 1918, the battle flyer died

Red Baron...Blue Max
The albatross flies high
Red Baron...Blue Max
He's got you in his sights

Well, this is OT to this thread because it is a non-combat flying song but still cool.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cqmD1R2rntU

I have done the same thing in an RV-4 with my brother in the front seat. It was in the San Joaquin(could never spell it) Valley in CA scaring cows and seriously pissing off farmers, and I'll never forget the shocked look on a young teen aged kid's face as he stood holding a fishing pole on the canal bank as we tore around the bend following the canal just above the tree tops. We flew right over that poor kid, it must have really freaked him out, I laughed though.

Of course Aces High as referenced by the OP - the lyrics are superb:

There goes the siren that warns of the air raid
Then comes the sound of the guns sending flak
Out for the scramble weve got to get airborne
Got to get up for the coming attack.

Jump in the cockpit and start up the engines
Remove all the wheelblocks theres no time to waste
Gathering speed as we head down the runway
Gotta get airborne before its too late.

Running, scrambling, flying
Rolling, turning, diving, going in again
Run, live to fly, fly to live, do or die
Run, live to fly, fly to live. aces high.

Move in to fire at the mainstream of bombers
Let off a sharp burst and then turn away
Roll over, spin round and come in behind them
Move to their blindsides and firing again.

Bandits at 8 oclock move in behind us
Ten me-109s out of the sun
Ascending and turning our spitfires to face them
Heading straight for them I press down my guns

Rolling, turning, diving
Rolling, turning, diving, going in again
Run, live to fly, fly to live, do or die
Run, live to fly, fly to live, aces high.

Reflected - Gravity Off

(Corsairs vs Zeros)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6exfgVO34bA

Fighter sweep over boiling seas, deep beyond enemy lines
The wingman screams in the radio "Four Zeros on our nine!"
Ghost riders in the sky, facing them
Guiding my crosshair chasing white wings

Gravity off!Warbirds are tearing up the sky
stuck between the earth below and the heavens up above
Gravity off! You make one wrong move you die
Breathing smoke, engine's burning, time to say goodbye

Rolling over to get behind, the world's fading to black
All my comrades dead or fleeing, no one's got my back.
hold my breath, time slows down, the air ignites
guiding my crosshair piercing white wings

He's falling down, but none of us is going home...

No feeling of triumph, zeros dive out from the sun
deadly burst of silver rain, there is nowhere to run
breathing smoke, controls gone, desparately
Guiding my Corsair chased by white wings

Hey hey hey, air combat, hey!
Hey hey hey, air combat, hey!
Dux Corvan at your six,
Dux Corvan at your six,
kiss his butt and hit the silk!

When the scramble alarm is soundin',
and the childish vulchers they're poundin',
I go up into my bonery Lerche standin',
and soon up thru' their arses bangin'.

(guitar and trumpets riff)

How sad is virtual pilot's life,
all day with silly Track IR caps on head,
while his probably unsatisfied wife
lies with sexpert milkman Dux in bed.

Hey hey hey, air combat, hey!
Hey hey hey, air combat, hey!
Dux Corvan at your six,
Dux Corvan at your six,
kiss his butt and hit the silk! (3 times)

http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/blink.gifDux, thats a...erm...yup...a slammin' dope fly pimp groove there man, you have a natural talent, i think...maybe.

Anyway i thought "wish you were here" ~ Pink Floyd was about his Dad who became a fighter pilot.

So, so you think you can tell Heaven from Hell,
blue skies from pain.
Can you tell a green field from a cold steel rail?
A smile from a veil?
Do you think you can tell?
And did they get you to trade your heroes for ghosts?
Hot ashes for trees?
Hot air for a cool breeze?
Cold comfort for change?
And did you exchange a walk on part in the war for a lead role in a cage?
How I wish, how I wish you were here.
We're just two lost souls swimming in a fish bowl, year after year,
Running over the same old ground.
What have we found? The same old fears.
Wish you were here.

Inspired by Dux's masterpiece...

Low Flyer, Low Flyer
C'mon baby I'll take you higher
'Cos my Whirlwind's faster
Than a Spifire

chorus:

C'mon baby I'll treat you right
As you hold my joystick
Through the night
Doin' it fast and horizontal at a very low height

Flyin'low, flyin' low
An unbelieveable one-man show
Takin' them Lufties
Where the tombstones grow

(chorus)

Stickin' it bad to those blue asshats
I got Fowler flaps and Handley-Page slats
My Peregrines purr like a pair of cats
As I treat them Messers like welcome mats

(chorus)

I got four Hispano's and no cross-feed
As I satiate my need for speed
I'm a flying textbook
You all should read

(chorus)

Comin' at ya like a prop-driven jet
The meanest mofo you ever met
Gonna rip you a new one
So you don't forget

(chorus)

Flyin' low, flyin' free
An awesome one-man killing spree
Even Iron-Works can't catch me
Gotta go baby, Mom's calling for tea.

(chorus to fade)

'Reap the Wild Wind' by Ultravox.
Early 80's - I can't remember the lyrics, but the video for this song featured a Spitfire a la Battle of Britain.

Roger Waters' Dad was in the Royal Fusiliers, and died at Anzio. Eric Waters (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eric_Fletcher_Waters)
I think a good deal of the song is about his dad, but also about Syd Barrett.

Remember the bit at the beginning of the film of The Wall, think it's called 'When the Tigers broke free?' where the Tommy's loading his Webley...

Video here. (http://www.last.fm/music/Pink+Floyd/+videos/+1-biAtdDJv0t0)

It's not on the album though, and but did make it onto the recut of The Final cut, 2004.
