I'm going for thieves. From what I've seen they look to best best faction. Not only do they help you fight, they also distract enemies.

what about all 3? I havnt seen them say at any point you can only get help from 1 faction.

Courtesans, hire a whole pack of them to just follow me around. Whenever the guards chase me, just ditch em, any sensible man would rather stay with 20 girls than go off and chase an assassin halfway around the city.

That's what I was wondering just a few minutes ago! Have courtesans follow you, swooning all over. That would make you feel like such a pimp.

On-topic: I would go with theives. Sneaky(therefore deadly), cunning, loyal. Perfect faction for me. Second has to go to the courtesans.

Theives would come in second.

I hope all the assassinations can be completed without imploying the help of these "factions". Cause it would be kinda wierd if they forced us to use one of them.

Anyway, I'd go with courtesans. Somewhat subtle, and deadly. And also because they're a good distraction just in case you don't want to enter a fight or need them to make a kill easier.

Mercs SRSLY FTW.

Thieves and courtesans are definitely cool additions, but when I heard about the mercs, they instantly became the only faction I cared about.

Thieves can climb and parkour with you, and I highly doubt to see parkouring courtesans (though it would be good for them lols).

I wonder if the factions have a rock-paper-scissors style of attributes, one's better than the other in one aspect but weaker in another.

Well, the devs are always talking about diversity in the game, right?
And Patrice is quite afraid of the option that players will choose just one tactic and stick to it, right?
Given all that, I'm quite sure you'll have to use different factions on different occasions. Also, it's possible that only one or two factions are available in specific areas. (i.e, in Florence you can only use the Mercenaries).

Xanatos2007
08-14-2009, 04:17 AM
Makes sense. What about using multiple factions at once? Like if you're about to attack a HEAVILY fortified position you could have the courtesans draw away the main gate guards (leaving fewer-but-still-many guards to deal with) and storm in with a group of mercs, then employing thieves to aid in your escape (since they seem to be the most agile).

Come to think of it, Ezio seems to have the best of all three: he's charming, agile & stealthy and is more than capable of handling himself in combat.

Actually, that's a very good idea.. combining all of them. It gives you much more options to ue when planning a battle/assassination. Also, I'd like all the factions to be able to do more than one thing, like, the thieves should be able to disturb the guards and fight enemies for you. This way, you'll have more variants to you.

Obviously in order to have multiple factions working together it will require you to do more work, but it seems worth it.

in a way, i kinda hope that you cant so this..

i mean, of course make friends with every faction, but i hope that you can only choose 1 faction to help per mission. This way, it adds to the whole seeking your target and setting a trap thing. Think about it. If you used every faction you could do what Xanatos said, simply distract the guards with courtesans, take them out with the mercs, and complete the mission with thieves. Its just makes it too easy and means you hardly have to lift a finger.

I like the idea of having to carefully choose which faction it is, eg: if you are just trying to quietly slip into a palace, get the courtesans to distract the guards. If you are trying to ambush a patrol, get the thieves to jump out at them. While if you're simply trying to storm a barricade, get the mercs to fight for you. </div></BLOCKQUOTE>

You missed 2 important points that Xana made:
1. you use them when you are about to attack a HARD target, not just a regular target, so you need more firepower/help.
2. having them all work together for you will require more work. So actually, the total amount of work (before the mission and the mission itself) will be identical, since you put more efforts in the pre-mission, so it won't effect the general diffuclty, and will give you more option.

And after all, it should be just an option. Maybe you don't want to use it on FIRST place, but when you play the game for the 2nd time? the 5th? In ACI you had to actually THINK in order to find new and thrilling ways to finish the game, so why not give you the option to use more than just group and increase the variety?

Danvish
08-14-2009, 07:23 AM
Yeh man, I got your point from the first place.

I'm not saying, you should turn every hard mission into an easy one..

My point is you should be given the option to do it. Taking the mission you described, why making it that only one faction will be efficient in getting you inside? Why not making all factions efficient, but you have to adjust your style to that of the faction in order to use them in the best way. I'm not saying "Make it easy", what I'm saying is "Give us the option to choose how we want to do it and don't handicap us".

Get my point?

I definantley like Xana's idea over yours C-swain. no-offense. But it does remain optional, and it would take more preparation. Also, it's not like Ezio is sitting back in a lawn chair and ordering people around. He can still fight with the mercenaries.

But anyways, jugding from clips in the second developer diary, screenshots, and the demo, I vote thieves since they appear to be able to fight, steal, light fires, hide bodies, disguise themselves, and distract, while the mercenaries can only fight and the courtesans can only distract. Also, it seems like you would need a lot of courtesans to disract a lot of guards, (unless they were into that sort of thing) while it should only take one thief to get an entire group to chase him. I know that more abilities for courtesans and mercenaries might be revealed later, but I'm basing my vote on what's been revealed thus far.

Do you think you'll have an option not to side with any group and go every mission alone?

Would possibly make it a tad difficult, and I reckon, not possible. I think the leaders (and their factions) are written into Ezio's storyline now.

thekyle0
08-14-2009, 09:41 AM
Ubi said that investigations would be a natural progression of the story, and they also said introducing the factions would be as well. It seems like to do a mission, like in the demo where the thieves lit the fires for the flying machine, you would need to use the factions. There might be situations where you won't need to use certain factions, and it will just be more difficult. But there certainly will be missions you need the help of a certain faction.

I agree with Danvish. The guards have a "shut up, stand up, look straight and wait to die" attitude. A couple of good looking girls would distract them for a good deal of time.

Danvish is talking about one girl. And in a group of 5 guards, it's damn sure there's going to be someone who is either "decent" (already has a wife and doesn't feel the need to look at other women), half way smart (ohh look.. a single young woman comes here trying to turn our attention away from the place we're guarding. Hmm..) or just feels the call of duty and does what he's meant to do.

A good example of this is in the trailer. Only the fat guard got distracted, the other bodyguards didn't.

Doesn't feel the need? On a normal boring day of work they probably would look.

Half way smart or paranoid?

or just feels the call of duty and does what he's meant to do.
It's possible but very few men would completely ignore a pretty girl flirting with them.

With an assassin in town? I doubt it.. and sure, they might take a quick look but that'd be about it.

Half way smart.

You don't need to completely ignore her. Of course you won't. You check her for weapons (just by looking, btw..) and then move on. Any bodyguard knows this. Getting a pretty girl with a mini skirt walk past the bodyguard(s) is such an obvious trick it's a joke. As long as you're not half monkey, you'd know better than to look for longer than 0.1 seconds.

But courtesans just don't walk by? Don't they and try to seduce them a bit? In the trailer only the fat target stop the guards from talking to the girls, not the guards themselves. It showed that most of the guards only react to dead obvious things. If you didn't know that an assassin would use girls to distract you, you wouldn't be as alert in their presence.

I think the fat guy in the trailer was like the Captain of the Guard or something, Ezio might've been doing a favour for the thieves guild (like an optional secondary objective). Like in AC1 where the informers asked you to take out archers so they could move around more easily (in the PC version), the thieves might've asked you to take out the COP (Chief Of Police) to throw the guards into confusion. Just a thought...

When you guard for that long, and absolutly sure that nothing will happen, and you're getting so bored you want to die, it takes much much less than a pretty woman flirting with you to distract you for long enough to allow a Master-assassin to sneak by you...

Obviously you've never been in the army, and have never done patroling for more than 10 hours straight...
When you guard for that long, and absolutly sure that nothing will happen, and you're getting so bored you want to die, it takes much much less than a pretty woman flirting with you to distract you for long enough to allow a Master-assassin to sneak by you... </div></BLOCKQUOTE>
I'll keep that in mind next time I try and infiltrate that military base...

That gives me an idea; will guards be more alert in the morning than they are in the evening? As Sun Tzu said:
"Now a soldier's spirit is keenest in the morning, by noon it has begun to flag, and in the evening his mind is bent only on returning to camp. Therefore, a clever general avoids an army when its spirit is keen and attacks it when it is sluggish and inclined to return. This is the art of studying moods."
Maybe this will be mentioned in Altair's Codex (the Assassin's equivalent of Sun Tzu's Art of War, in my opinion).

Or obviously I'm just not that dumb to get fooled by something like that.

After all the movies and such that show girls seducing men in order to trick them, all of us wouldn't be fooled by that. Back then Courtesans would have been a great way of distraction.

So true.
I'm just wondering how the Mercenaries don't have a lot of votes. I guessing people don't like their fights fought for them?

"Mercenaries" is a really broad term. Have we been given a description of the faction? As the term alone tells you nothing. If it was a realistic "mercenaries guild" then there'd be assassins, thieves, warriors and so on for hire..

From what I've seen mercenaries are just really good fighters, whereas thieves only use knives and such.

I think that it's going to more along the lines of depending on the situation and in what stage you're in as far as your plans. For example, the courtesans can seduce someone in revealing something pertinent to your mission, the thieves would be used to help you get close to your target, by say lighting the fires in the city to help with the flying machine and finally using the mercs to help with your escape, whether it would be to slow the guards down or all out fighting them.

I'll say it again, after you've been patroling for 10 hours and nothing had happend, you let you guard down automaticly. Trust me on this one.

Depends on the person. And even if you let your guard down.. if something happens, you'll be back up again. You don't care very much about your own life if you let some girl distract you.

Sun Tzu's book is more like the book of the obvious.. I don't get what the buzz is about.

Then surely you have done some patroling.

You want to tell me that after 10 hours of patroling in a public place, not some remoted tower, a pretty lady will come and start flirting with you and you won't respond? You'll stand still as an English Guard of the Queen?

I wouldn't lose my sense of the surroundings.. and especially if I'm told to keep an eye on a certain place, I'd at least position myself so that I have constant vision of it. More so if it was known there's an assassin that wants to target the guy I'm supposed to protect.

I would definetely try all these fractions, but I think: courtesans, thieves, mercs - in this order. I consider myself Master Assassin since I've completed the whole first game using ONLY hidden blade. I wouldn't want someone fight for me.

Only using the hidden blades? Nice.

I tried finishing it with JUST the hidden blade, but chopping through a thick beam to rain down logs on the Templars was a but tricky with it. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/51.gif

I had the same problem.

Other than that particular moment, though, playing through without any unnecessary deaths was harder. I started a new game, and went from start to finish killing only assassination targets and enemies the game doesn't let you run away from.

Watch a public area for 10 hours without losing sense of surrondings? Sure.

You wouldn't know that the assassins is using other people to distract you.

Changed my mind! After talking to my grandfather about it, he told me that his father told him that his fathers father told him that (etc) a long time ago, one of my ancestors was a thief. No joke.
So that's why I'm going with the thieves now.

Because I did silly. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/53.gif

And because they seem like they do more than any other faction.
