pretty much what the title says...

I've just started a standard in game hellcat campaign, and after flying user made efforts lately, have found it really lacking. I've just done a quick search over at airwarfare, but there didnt appear to be one there.

i know there are some f4f campaigns around, but i really wanted to fly a '43 carrier op, and i dont like the corsair...

so if anyone could recommend a good campaign, i would be really gratefull

cheers in advance.

I have a partially completed Marianas Turkey Shoot campaign for the F6F-3. It's about 15 missions long...but I'm waiting on the addon patch to see what added Japanese aircraft arrive...and I'm working on some other projects first.

Sadly, user-made carrier-based campaigns seem to be few and far between. I don't know of any.

Has anyone done a Wildcat campaign?

icefire, looking forward to your hellcat campaign, sounds interesting. what sort of missions are you doing? strike, escort, sweeps etc..

oh and Cactus diary by birdbrain is a good wildcat campaign.

Zeus cat, your right, there is very little carrier action sadly. I always feel that little bit more satisfaction after a carrier mission, because of the relief of getting back down again safely. However, i might take this opportunity to try your sbd campaign.

As much of a mix as possible. There are CAPs, fighter sweeps, bomber interceptions (the wave of Japanese torpedo and dive bombers coming in to hit the carriers for instance), and little search and rescure operation, and a bit of close air support for marine LCV's.

At the moment the greatest problem is that we don't have Judys and Jills as aircraft in the game. Right now I have Val's and Kate's filling in....I understand that the Jill is likely to arrive as an AI torpedo bomber so that will do in that regard. I may just use all Jills when it arrives. Or if I can get a good Val skin that makes it look more like it belongs in 1944.

Cactus Diary only has a few carrier flights in it, but I am working on another one now...

It starts out in the Wildcat for the first 10 missions, and then you move up to the Hellcat with VF-9. I have a few more missions to do, but I am making progress. I have finished the "Torch" operation, skins, medals & other little stuff & tested most of the first part.

I have done training missions & a Wake mission in the F6F-3, but I am only about 2/3 done in all. I will keep you posted.

Icefire's Hellcat campaign will be an excellent continuation if you fly mine, as VF-9 finished their tour just before the Marianas campaign. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

There were D3As, B5Ns, and A6M2 fighter-bombers aboard the smaller carriers (they were considered too small to handle the B6Ns and D4Ys).

Oooh...thanks for that tidbit. I didn't know that. Well if they provide a B6N and I get some appropriately marked skins for the others I'm set http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

For those that don't know...WIP B6N from the dev updates (a while back):

Well, Its not a campaign, but my Historical Pacific Single Mission Pack has some missions with the F6F-3,F6F-5 Hellcat as well as some F4U-1Ds amount others. In total there are 31 missions for various services in the Pacific.

More info on the IJN carrier air groups at Philippine Sea:

CarDiv 1 (Shokaku, Zuikaku, Taiho) may have carried about 7 D3As, and possibly some A6M2 fighter/diver-bombers, in addition to 79-81 A6M5s, 90 D4Ys, and 56 B6Ns [although, as these were all "big deck" carriers, there would have been no apparent reason for their dive bombing squadrons to use the the less capable D3As and A6M2s, and it is probable they were not actually there]

CarDiv 2 (Junyo, Hiyo, Ryuho) carried 27 D3As, as well as 80-81 A6M5s, 9-27 D4Ys (on the larger Junyo) and 18-27 B6Ns.

CarDiv 3 (Chitose, Chiyoda, Zuiho) around 12-18 B5Ns, and around 45-63 A6M5s. They also probably had an indeterminate amount of A6M2 fighter/dive bombers (up to 45), and a half dozen B6Ns (or D4Ys, though the small size of these carries and the large deck space required by the D4Y makes it doubtful it was used).

The best numbers I come up with are:
190 A6M5/A6M5b
31 A6M2 bombers
79 D4Y
27 D3A
78 B6N
18 B5N

Inerestingly for our purposes, fully one third of the strike aircraft available to Ozawa were A6M2s, D3A, and B5Ns, types we fortunately already have available in game. Plus, it was reported that some of the A6M5s were also carrying bombs. Obviously a optimal recreat of the Marianas Turkey shot should include B6Ns (which it seems we are not getting, for the time being) and/or D4Ys, but as it stands, a reasoable reenactment can be accomplished. In fact, it could be argued that the lack of USN light carriers and battleships, and IJN light carriers and heavy cruisers, some of the primary targets of both sides airstrikes, is as much a problem for the battle as the lack of D4Ys, B6Ns, and SB2Cs.
