View Full Version : Request for add-on: new default skins using best of community work

Some of the default skins leave a bit to be desired (I'm thinking specifically of the neon green early 190s and several VVS rides). I think it'd be cool to replace some of these default skins with the best of the third-party skins. Would be a great recognition for some of the very talented skinners, and online players would really appreciate the improvement, since many servers are now requesting players to use the "default" skins only.

For example, in game Bf 109K-4 default generic skin:

And now Hammerd's updated generic K-4 skin:

Everyone should get to experience this great work and the best way to make that happen would be to simply include it with the add-on. Hey, and it's an additional feature that requires almost no work on the development side. Everyone wins! /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

couldn't agree more - they could just take the all time top 50 from il2skins.And Emil should have some more default skins as well - its the most popular a/c dl there.

I agree. Perhaps the default skin could be user selectable. I hope there will be more versatility to customisation of skins in the next sim.(BoB).

What I'd also like to see is a feature where you can select or import a personal pilot insignia, that will be applied to whatever plane you fly, like unit insignias at the moment. Many times in a campaign I'd like to have a plane thats a bit different from the rest of the squad, but new skins are too radically different. I would like to use the default skin but with my own added badge.

It's an excellent idea, shame that it will likely never happen. /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-sad.gif Also, they would only be able to use skins without national markings, unfortunately alot of skinners don't include an "unmarked" version. I wish more people did this, as I like to use 3rd party skins in my campaigns. Even if you could somehow select a skin as default on your own that would be cool.

The better skinners usually include a no markings option. At least Hammerd certainly does.

It's too bad if it doesn't happen. I can't imagine an easier way for 1C/Maddox to give FB an even more cutting edge look than to take advantage of some of these great skins and put them in the advertisements for the add-on. The coolest part would be seeing these skins in online play with no concern for skin download lag. In the end, it would improve the look of the game for the average customer (who is not likely to seek out 3rd-party skins) at virtually no cost to 1C/Maddox. Makes sense from a business standpoint. Makes sense from a community involvement standpoint. It just plain makes sense.

But if offline campaigns are your main concern, I think Starshoy has explained how to alter the skins. You might ask him about it.

A.K.Davis, I do know how to alter the skins (and I use them extensively) in offline, that is why I like unmarked versions of skins. The national insignia cannot be removed or altered as far as I know unless you create a whole new campaign.

And many of the good skinners do include unmarked versions, certainly enough to make your peoposed add-on possible. Unfortunately alot of good skinners don't though.

I agree with what you are saying, and hopefully it will happen. I will be VERY surprised if it does though. /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-sad.gif
I am definitely into skins and have IL-2 skins bookmarked. The first thing I have to do when re-installing is back up my skin folder because it is PACKED. And I agree that the skins add alot to the game but sadly too many people aren't aware of/or just don't take the time to download skins. Actually it is funny, awhile back Hammerd posted one of his skins and I said "thanks, your skins are like an add-on themselves." So believe me we are on the same page. Now if it would only happen....

This is a great idea. I've enjoyed the work from many a "skinner" and it's ashame the netcode doesn't fully allow them to be used.

Either alter/fix the code to allow them to used without the FPS hit or simply put them in the game. I can't speak for the skinners, but I would think they would love to see their work in the finished product.

It is a very good idea : for exaple, the default skins for the Normandie-Nieman squadron for the Yak-9 and Yak_9D are completely wrongs, whereas it exists extraordinary skins by NNavirex I think.
