Uh, I was finally successful patching my original Il-2 to 1.2 a few weeks ago. It added the B-1 (I think) rocket-fighter. I have read about it a few years back, and it's cool to try it out in the game. I see one problem with it though. It does not have nearly enough ammo to be effective. I mean, 900kph speed is great when catching up to bombers, but its fragile nature means you can't hang back and get shot up by defensive gunners. Goota swoop in, fire and haul ***. However, at a high speed pass, it's easy to miss, and there is only enough ammo for maybe two enemy planes, if I'm lucky. Then you gotta disengage and leave. It seems like it uses the ShVAK cannons with like 30-40 rounds. Which is not nearly enough.

I know this is a what-if type of plane, but really, how can you shoot anything down when you only have enough ammo for maybe 6-7 seconds of continuous firing?

I would think that you'd be part of a squadron and that 2 kills per plane would be pretty devastating?

It was only ever a test plane to my knowledge, so ammo wasnt an issue really. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BI-1

With so short a fuel supply, how many passes you think you get before needing to run?
You glide all the way home with escorts after you?

Prototypes flew on their own power. Less what-if than the ones that never did.

Russians put rockets in fighters but they boost time was too limited to justify the weight
and expense. Little bit heavier La-7 with 1 or 2 minute rocket assist anyone?

Im saying 2 to 3 passes. but the me163 packs a bigger punch but its wings are prown to break if u pull back too hard at +300mph. B-1 its an ok plane its got a fast as hell acceleration though, which is good if u got enemy aircraft heading to your base and u need a fast plane to to get to there alt.

Did they? I know they used rocket boosters to assist in takeoffs of both fighters and bombers, but can you direct us to somewhere that tells how they used those in flight?

It would be. Problem is that AI can't hit a broadside of a barn with it. They just shoot in one long volley and run out of ammo http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif

The British experimented with ramjets in a Mustang I (it was proposed to mount ramjets under the centre section of Spitfires in the 1930s, ready for the Battle of Btitain, but that was far too optimistic in terms of timescale!).

The BI-1 was a very interesting project that also cost a few lives. If I'm lucky, I'll still have a video of one particular test flight. It's unfortunate, however, that the plane in the video ended up causing serious injury, perhaps death, to the pilot that day. I can't quite be sure. If I find it I'll upload it to Youtube.

And also, the BI-1 cannot safely reach 900 kph. At around 760 kph its airframe exhibits a "mach tuck" which causes it to dip sharply downward. In real life this probably resulted in a few fatalities. In game, it's easy to counter with enough altitude by killing the engine and rolling the plane on its back.

That being said, you can do some impressive things with the BI-1. IIRC, it can get up to almost 45,000 meters starting from sea level if you fly it right.
