View Full Version : Airfields in SoW....

I'm looking at the long game here, and wondering if airfield expansion/development or new completely new airfield construction will be a feature of the SoW series?

For example, Manston, the famous RAF base on the tip of Kent, north of Dover was radically altered from a large grass field in 1942 to one of two MASSIVE 'crash' runways (the other being in Suffolk) to accommodate badly damaged a/c returning from the continent.

Added to this the huge number of airfields constructed in East Anglia (that would eventually house the 8th AF) that didn't even exist at the time of the BoB, or as another example the Advanced Landing Grounds bulldozed out of farm land in Kent, Sussex and Hampshire and their affiliates in Normandy. Obviously to have these airfields around at time of the BoB would be very wrong, but they kinda have to be there for later stages of the war!

Hopefully I'm blowing hot air about an issue thats already being dealt with but if I'm raising new problems and data is needed I have much data concerning airfields of the 8th, 9th, RAF and the ALGs if any info is required - many with maps or overhead photographs.

I'd also like to hear from anyone else with sources just for my own private amusement if nothing else!

Similarly I'm sure German airfields experienced an equal amount of development and deployment throughout occupied Europe - be interesting to see any sources on these too.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

One to watch out for is West Malling near Maidstone, Kent. It was under construction during BoB so shouldn't be available for use. It will be interesting to see what Oleg's team do with that.

You're right about Manston; it should be remade for later war scenarios. Perhaps we'll end up with several versions of the GB/France map? Really the later ones could be moved further east in order to encompass more of Europe.

Here's hoping!

Here's hoping that we will see construction crews working on those airfields during the course of the war...One can dream http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

Choctaw111, looks like we have identical systems http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif
What a hoot. Mine came with 1G RAM and an Ultra card out of the box. It has 2G and GS+ now, and I also kicked up the power supply (a spotty USB drive made me try that). The machine came with 1 bad stick of RAM, and one of the RAID drives went TU this year. But, overall, a pretty well built machine.
