Why do you pickpocket and interorgate the citizens? How do they tie into the story? Are they aiding the enemy? What are they telling people about before you intereorgate them?

All you have to do, to answer your own questions, is LISTEN. Listen to what people say. They practically spell it out for you in the game. :/

Some of the information gathering missions are contrived and confusing.

Dude : Here's some plans to help kill so and so.
Bodyguard : I work for so and so.
Dude : Oh... okay...let me keep the plans and walk away then.
Bodyguard : Okie-dokie.

You must be dense to not figure out what the sub-missions are for, or why listening in on a conversation, or pick-pocketing is relevant to the game.

How about this? - you pick-pocket a map listing where the assassination target is, or you listen to guards discussing where a meeting is to be held, so your map gets updated with the location of your target.

Again - duh!
