Here is the first of a series of skins I'm creating for the soon to be released campaign "The Filthy Few" by ~HH~ Dubbo and myself.

Original template by Jester (Thank you)
Additional layers by Nitrous (Thank you) and myself.

Original template author unknown, but thanks.
Addtional layers by TonyT (Thank you) and myself.

Two of the Few

Here is the target drouge, an old glider.

Skins by (except as noted), Vlad_TheImpaler (that's me folks).

"Target Drouge" is from my first template. Yes, that one is ALL mine! (Thanks to 1.JaVa Serval for the insignia templates).

Please feel free to comment.

Skins will be available when the campaign comes out (two weeks be sure http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif) and for general release as soon as il2skins gets up and going.

really really nice weathered look, i really want some diff skins for all early war pto aircraft. really looking forward to shooting these down in my zero http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/784.gif

have you any plans to do any skins for the zero?

cheers fruitbat

ps, just noticed, how many times can you say really on the same line...

05-22-2005, 06:45 PM
Its one of the nicer F4F-3s I've seen. And the glider is very cool, or hot http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Who are the few and why are they so filthy?

Great skins, m8!

Thanks for the compliment. As for the Zero...there are many, many fine exapmles out there. At this time I don't feel I could make a significant contribution.

Thank you.

Thank you as well. Patience, patience. Release of the campaign should be within a fortnight. Be sure.

http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif Very Nice work -HH- Beebop and Team! I'll be looking forward to the release.

Well done guys...look forward to it!

Whats going on between you and the mutt????

Sorry, I don't really like the F4F skin. The rivets are too bold. So are the lines. I've never in my life seen an aircraft, no matter how dirty (and all of the aircraft I see are pretty **** dirty) with such overly distinctive panel lines and rivets.

05-23-2005, 05:14 PM
Your pretty negative towards people huh?
Second thread I have read in a few minutes with you putting people down - you don't like em don't fly em - easy.

05-23-2005, 05:17 PM
Lookin good Beebs! Might I suggest that you extend the green on the F4F for the whole cowling? I dunno, it just seems more fung schue -ish to me.

Well you can't please everyone now can you?

Keep in mind this is a fictional skin for a fictional mission. The concept is that a bunch of misfits do daring deeds to help the war effort, sort of in the same vein as "The Dirty Dozen". It's about as unlikely.
There is no way the US military would let such wrecks fly and no way they would let a bunch of complete misfits such as "The Filthy Few" fly them. We're talking fiction here.
The campaign is purely for fun so I expect "purists" will poo-poo it and that's OK.
I fly this sim for enjoyment. I enjoy flying historically correct missions as much as anyone but the limitations of the game prevent that from happening much outside of the Eastern Front and even then there are limitations.

These are my first really "serious" skins. I'm bound to make some errors. I'll take your comments under advisement though. Thank you.

Boosher, thanks for the comments. The next set of skins will have larger ID bands.

You see there's a story about why it's so small...it has to do with not having enough paint and....well you'll see when the campaign is released.

Okey doke, can't wait!

I kinda agree with LStarosta, although I believe he could have said it better.

Your SBD and glider look ALOT better. On the f4's wings, it looks like someone actually painted the rivets black with a small paint brush. I'd suggest greying them out by about 25% or so. It also seems as if their layers is above the weathering layers. As for the panel lines, they look good on the nose and horizontal stabilizers but not so good on the tail section. I really can't tell on the wings with the rivets like they are.

I'll bet that if you just make a few adjustments in that regard it'll be one hell of a nice skin.

Thanks for the input ClnlSanders.

Even though Mr. LaStarosta was a little heavy-handed in his comments, he did make some good points.

I beleive you may be correct though on where the Rivets/Panel Lines layer(s) are in relation to the weathering. I'll recheck the .psd and make adjustments. I also agree that a reduction up to 25% in opacity might be in order.

The F4F was my first in-depth skinning job and the SBD and Glider followed in order.

Thank you for the constructive and useful critique. I'll repost a (hopefully) improved version in a day or so.

Thanks for the input ClnlSanders.

No problem man.

Thanks to your comments ClnlSanders I've made some adjustments to the layers. On some layers the opacity had to be reduced by 90%, but IMO I think this is much better. Here are the results:

EDIT:In addtion to the Clnl's suggestions I've now added some chipping. This is the latest and I beleive final version.
Comments (that are helpful) are encouraged.

It looks quite good now. Just a thought: Add some paint chips/scratches on the wing around where the pilot gets in. You know, from his boots screwing up the paint. I tend to think it's overdone on most models, but in this case, since it hasn't been repainted in who knows how long, it'll look good.

edit: You know, since it's also needing a wash, light mud streaks there would probably look good as well. Also, can we see a shot of the underside?

edit 2: I had another thought. Since these guys are apparently undersupplied, it might be cool to make the target drouge patched up. You know, like it's been reused.

HEHEHE. Geesh! And make mine medium rare. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif If I haven't taken the time to say so lately, you are doing a helluva job m8. I'll fly it any way you finish it. And if you would, throw the ol' "HH" to the tail assembly and send it on as is. I know you are doing this for the campaign, but I'll fly it in other excursions to. That is if you are so inclined. To the best CO in the virtual skies of IL2! SALUTE!!

Our Tactical Officer mentioned the same thing to me. Instead of putting even more pics up to hamper our 56K friends I just replaced them with revised shots.

As requested here are some more shots:

Wing wear

Also I like the idea of the patched/used Target Drouge. I'll make the required modifications. Thanks for your input Clnl.

Your bucking more another promotion too? http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

Thanks for the compliment mate. My plans for tonight have changed due to circumstances beyond my control http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_mad.gif so I'll get you your special version ready for you.

-HH- Beebop... The New and Improved Skin looks Great!
I like the added pealed or chip paint weathering. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

You're right Nightshifter, "if you don´t like 'em, don't fly 'em" but I need to defend LStarosta here. He was just suggesting something that, indeed, is true. Those skins looks very nice, but the panel lines and bolts and rivets are just too bold. The original poster put up work in progress pics and as such, he has to expect (might even have asked for, if I recall correctly) suggestions from fellow skinners. Especially since they're well-founded and backed up by good arguments.

LStarosta has, in my opinion, one of the wittiest humors around these forums, and I have to add that I disagree that he puts people down. It must be one big coincidence that you stumbled across two negative posts of his. LStarosta may be blunt sometimes, but he's just being straightforward, I reckon, and I'm sure he didn't mean to offend.

To LStarosta:

How many more times will I have to do this before you grant me a date with Julia? (Got the name right this time!) http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/53.gif

New and Improved!

Thanks for all the suggestions gentlemen.

Olive Drab and Summer Khaki canvas patches made from discarded tents

Added door details, hinges/latch/wear around entry areas

New rudder and tail assembly. The last one was shot to bits. They scavenged this one from another crashed glider

If you read my response to LaStarosa I did appreciate his comments, which did have validity.
He may be witty but I think it was the implyed tone that people objected to and his implication that in his opinion they weren't good enough for him to fly.
I guess my error was not stating explictly in the first post that these were intended to be non-historical, fictional skins.
None the less the advise was followed.
Personally I liked the way ClnlSanders said it. It felt more "constructive". but that's just me.

I really like those tent patches http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif. Here's another idea, on the drouge, maybe a couple of beer can patches. I remember seeing a picture of this somewhere. It was some pacific unit, not sure of the nationality but they where flying american planes. Anyways, there where some bullet holes and they patched em with cut up beer cans. I'm not sure if it would work well in a skin though. I don't really think the resolutions are good enough for it to look like more than just little squares. It just may not be worth the effort on that note.

If the tail was scanveged off the ground, maybe weather the hell out of one side? You know, like it's been sitting one side up for quite some time and it got sun bleached on one side but not the other?

Anyways, they're awesome. Let me know when the package is fully ready. I'm even going to start seriously flying the f4 now because of this http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif.
