I have been playing IL2 for 4 months now. I feel I am pretty good flier. However, Online I get killed more than I kill. I see guys tracers comming nowhere near me and I get "mike_espo body is riddled by bullets" or some such message. I am beginning to wonder if my rig is the problem. Does the computer somehow make better fighters online, like processor or RAM or video card, I got a 1.7gHz pentium 4 and Im gonna double ram and get a 128 vid card when the patch comes out for FB. Any insights?

thanks

If the game is smooth, and you've got broadband, there should not be any problem with your machine. Those upgrades shouldn't hurt though.

Client inconsistancies like misplace tracers are caused by lag, which some people say is worse than IL-2. This may be partially remedied with the patch.

Insert sig here.

I got a 56k modem. When I shoot, there is a little studder though

Keep in mind that the IL2 online code is client-side, meaning that calculations are based on the client not the server (unlike most FPS games like Unreal Tournament).

So if you shoot at somebody and YOU see the hit. your computer sends the info that you hit your opponnent even if on HIS computer, due to lag differences, you just missed him.

The advantages of client side is that what you see is generally what you get (over simplified perhaps).

Let me suggest that this has nothing to do with your computer's performance. Till now you were fighting against AI pilots, who are, well, limited in their reactions etc. Now you are fighting against real people, who are more experienced both in flying and in fighting than you. They do things you can never expect of an AI pilot. So be prepared to get a hard beating before you gain experience yourself.

BTW. I am in the same position, after a cople of month offline I got into the onlide dogfights first time vere this weekend and I was very much inferior to anybody else on the playground... But well that's the way things are built, and we are lucky that this is not a real thing and you are not a real soviet recruit put in your I-16 you hardly know against veteran German flyiers risking your real life.

Heads up, Frischlinge!

your problem happens to a lot of ppl ... its internet lag that makes accurate shots not appear close

56k connection is slow for a resource hog game like FB
a 128Mb Graphics card is a MUST
512 Mb of RAM is the minimum ( more RAM the better , same with CPU speed )
a slow motherBoard doesnt help this game ... its a Internal ( of your computer ) bandwidth Hog as well as a Internet bandwidth hog

ppl with fast connections & fast computers still get LAG as well

If I go on to a Dogfight server, I will get killed more than I kill. EVERYONE does! Except maybe those Jerry flyers who insist on flying at 5000 and only come down for the odd peck! The nature of dogfight servers is that it`s very hard to stay alive even if you are good.

Maybe do coops or scripted games with teamwork.
