I played online last night for the first time in ages - on the Winds of War server - and I had a whale of a time. I especially liked the Monte Cassino map, where a load of us in Mossies circled the mountain top and swooped in to strafe among the ruins, while the occasional FW-190 dived through the pack trying to pick us off.

At one point I loaded up a P-47 ready for some "highway patrolling", but when I spawned in there were about six A-20s on the airfield all taxiing to the runway. I quickly turned off my engine and put the P-47 to bed, and re-loaded with my own A-20 and joined the party. Off we went in a big gaggle of bombers. I wasn't on comms, but followed the leader until we all swooped down from the clouds over an enemy airbase. All hell broke loose as we liberally scattered bombs over the parked planes. Joy to behold. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

The server was crowded, and this meant that takeoff and landing were very dicey. Collisions on the tarmac seemed to be the norm rather than the exception. At one point there were about 20 Allied pilots all using one small grass airstrip - from both sides simultaneously! I had rather unwisely chosen a B-25 at this point so spent a long time trying to be as far out of everyone else's way as possible. I managed to avoid hitting anyone on the ground, but must have been rammed at least four or five times by people using the taxiways as runways.

Kudos and respect go to the Servermeisters for giving us such a good play area, and cheers to the players who were courteous at all times - an important thing when so many tarmac crashes are taking place. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

PS: Sincere apologies to the poor Spitfire pilot I mistook for a Bf-109 we were both chasing. I got mixed up in the melee and only noticed my error as I blew one of his big elliptical wings off. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-sad.gif I really need to brush up my aircraft identification skills. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/shady.gif (If its any consolation, I did get the 109 soon after.)

I wonder if we were on at the same as I remember the A-20's and later a whole mess of us on that grass field with 47's and 25's every where! The server was quite full and a good time. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

I remember one of the Luftwaffe pilots congratulated us afterwards for the big team attack thing. It was nice to know they were enjoying themselves too - though I suppose to a FW-190 driver a squadron of A-20s is like gateaux to a fat child. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif
