From http://www.russiandvd.com/store/product.asp?sku=40205&genreid=29&genresubid=99

Based on real life events that took place at the very end of the Afghanistan war in 1988-89, this movie talks about the tragic fate of the famous 9th company of the 345th airborne regiment. Soviet soldiers received order to take over strategically important heights to secure the safe passage of the main forces. The soldiers entered unequal battle with the horde of the "Black Arabs" -- mercenaries of the little-known at that time Osama bin Laden. Request for backup remained unanswered -- it was exactly at this day when the order was given to withdraw the Soviet army from Afghanistan. Everyone dies except one sole survivor who relates the history of the 9th company.

My best efforts. Neither Russan nor English are my native languages http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Uzunov---you write better than 99% of the native speakers, and better than many with doctorates! Cheers, Henry James

P.S. I will get the film when Russian DVD gets a version with English subtitles.

I don't know but if the guy playing a sniper has a posh accent and the RUSSIAN genaral is talking in a cockney accent then you are watching Enemy at the gate.

The director took some artistic liberty for the sake of making the movie more dramatic, IRL they lost just a few men, were in constant contact with HQ and had air and arty support.
