Hello everyone, sorry for my bad english.
I am new to this forum and not all that new gamer of SH3. I have completed 21 patrols, sink a lot merchant ships, patroled around england, gibraltar, east america coast and even egypt (I sneaked throuth girbraltar and it has 2 ports). I sneaked in all ports of england and north america and africa. I play SH3 with no mods on 55% realism (I use automatic targeting system and free view for fun) and I kill small, costal, C2, C3, small tanker, T2, T3 tankers with one torpedo. The current date is 1942-08-20. And here goes the questions:

1. Where the hell are all the cruisers, carriers, battleships? All I meet is few types of DD, flower corvetes and armed trawlers. Also plaines and all types of merchant ships. I havent seen not a single cruiser or carrier or battleship.
2. The manual shows flotilas and ships you get if you serve in that flotila, but there are no mentioning of IXC/40, IXD2, XXI. How do I get IXC/40? Time map shows that it should be available by the current date I am. I have ~20k renown and a ship IXB. The ship is good but it has a limited range so I have to go on slow speed to save diesel fuel all the way to america (patrol grid). If I buy IXC and upgrade I dont have a renown for IXC/40 so I dont know what to do.
3. My current rank is Leutenent Commander, is there any higher rank than this?

Thanks in advance for your answers. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

I'll address myself to question # 1. If you are bold enough to infiltrate ports, you can on occasion find warships at anchor. I personally do not attack enemy ports, as it is ahistorical for the most part. Yes, there were a few intrepid men like Gunther Prien, but they were the exception to the rule that U-boats were deployed to where they could sink ships sailing alone or in expected convoy lanes. The game does seem to make port infiltration much easier and less risky than it was in real life. If you read Prien's account of his infiltration of Scapa Flow you will know how difficult it really was. Prien did not expect to come home, anticipating death or capture for him and his crew. His Knight's Cross for his attack was well deserved.

Enemy warship groups can be intercepted at sea. As far as I know, there is no way to know where they will be. I have intercepted a number of carriers, battleships and cruisers at sea. It will happen for you if you are persistent. You are not the first person to ask this question, believe me. This game is very unpredictable; I have read many accounts here of players radioing in contact reports and then seeing a Luftwaffe raid on the convoy. I have never yet seen that in spite of my many patrols. I seem to be rather charmed in my ability to find task forces at sea and have developed my personal attack strategies. Probably my most memorable attack was sinking two battleships and a cruiser from one task force by launching multiple torpedoes timed to impact roughly at the same time. Somewhere in my archives I have a screenshot of the torpedoes hitting, with multiple waterspouts as they hit. Sometimes you will see cruisers or battleships sailing with a convoy. My personal opinion is that the game does not accurately reflect this aspect, as the warships sail inside the convoy at convoy speed, making them very vulnerable to torpedo attack. There is no way the Royal Navy would sail a precious battleship, capable of making more than 20 knots, at convoy speed of say 8-10 knots. I believe that major warships escorting convoys sailed independently of the convoy with their own escort screen, but close to the convoy should a Kriegsmarine ship try to intercept. The Royal Navy always feared a ship like Graf Spee or Tirpitz getting their hands on a convoy. When British intelligence thought a German surface raider was at sea, they would often detach large warships for convoy escort.

Most of my task force interceptions have occurred to the west of Scotland and Ireland, in the approaches to Britain from the west. Sometimes there will be opportunities around historical engagements. Some mods script this into play. For example, there will be Royal Navy task forces at sea in April, 1940, simulating the invasion of Norway or the Normandy landings in 1944. Be patient and keep playing and your time will come.

It took me almost 2 years to find a first task force. It was near Gibraltar, on the Atlantic side. They were sailing by, I took a shot from 5000m, missed and got promptly sunk http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_frown.gif

So yes, they are out there, but VERY VERY rare

agree, capital ships are rare in the game - I met twice - except below - close to Scapa Flow

About question # 1. I played SH3 twice, the campaigns starting from 1939 and 1940, both times I did about 21 patrols and met no big warships. I encounter big and small convoys and task forces. The task force are made from merchants, tankers, troop ships and two or three small protection ships.

Once I infiltrated enemy ports I usualy find one docked DD witch is not worth a torpedo, because while you submerged it can do nothing to you. Few armed thrawlers on guard and sometimes few merchants or tankers rarely.

There was one time when I had a radio message about task force with speed of 21 knots in mid atlantic, but it was far away (~50km) and heading oposite direction so I couldnt intercept because my ship does 21 knots on flank speed in good weather conditions. And it's a waste of diesel fuel.

Well, I'll keep trying to find some big ones to kill. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

About question # 2. I found the answer myself. I overlooked file flotilla.cfg and realized that you don't get newer than IXC big u-boat, and don't get XXI at all. You get only medium sized VII series ships in certain flotillas. I think I'll try to fix that. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Task force = Capital ships + escorts !
sometimes task force is protecting convoys or particular ships like passenger liner

Capital ships are berthed in few ports like Scapa Flow and Loch Ewe. Time of berthing is mentioned below :
http://alexbret.perso.cegetel....itle=Hunting_Grounds (http://alexbret.perso.cegetel.net/indexd9fa.html?title=Hunting_Grounds)

I sailed by type XXI - Norwegian flotilla - Bergen !
you need renown - 30.000

Well I dont know if there is a bug or what, but yesterday I got radio message of "TASK FORCE" speed 7 knots, far away, so I intercepted and cought it. It consisted of 3 or 4 tankers, 4 C3 cargo, 4 C2 cargo and lot of small merchants. The protection of the "TASK FORCE" was 2 flowe corvetes and one clemson DD. My uboat took some punishment but sunk 4 tankers and some C3 and C2 cargo ships (I got more than 100k tonage for that). Bastards destroyed all three flak guns, deck gun, but luckly I managet to bail out with my "flank, dive deep, and turn" tactic and when deep use silent runninghttp://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif The point is that it was a convoy with name of "task force". And no capital ships around.

About the XXI, I don't know for sure but if you play mod free SH3 the manual doesnt tell you that you get XXI. Also as I looked over flotilla.cfg I found that bergen is 7th flotilla and here is 7th flotilla code:
