(Original IL2, still haven't picked up FB)
I guess mybe I'm late to the party on this one, but I flew this little fellow the other night for the first time and had a blast! It may be a bit slow and somewhat lacking in the armament department, but man is it nimble! Lots of fun. I was chasing an IL-2 around on some HL server and was having a blast staying on six and just laying in MG fire on him. I think I had picked the Type 18, though... and only had the 4Ӕ7mm's. I think the Type 24 has 2Ӕ20mm and 2 MG's... not sure.

Then the server quit and I decided to try some QMB in a 4 on 4 with all I-16's. what a neat little furball this makes for. No BnZing going on here... just a big knot of those little guys all TnBing around each other. Makes me yearn for a WWI sim. I think slower planes with less guns might make for a fun time. You know, so you have to earn each kill by wearing out your enemy with MG's instead of one massive cannon shot for one kill.

In FB you'll need to learn to fly her with out pushing the stick forward.

but it is a lot more difficult to fly the I-16 in FB, the engine dies of negative G`s.

Awww, really? Is that something that will be fixed in the patch, or is that the way it's supposed to be? If not, I 'll just keep flying her in IL-2. Fun plane! >8)

It's correct.

She's still a good plane you just have to fly her with different tactics. As I stated above.

Oh, so it's just a quirk that's in the plane. That's cool... makes it more interesting to me then >8)

Yes, you really should "upgrade" to FB.
The I-16 is a very fun and challenging plane to fly in FB, and as a bonus you also get the I-153 to play with!

If you love the I-16 you'll also love the I-153.

Ahhh... the Tchayka?! Nice... that one would probably be the same kind of fun. I am going toget FB as soon as the patch is released. Looks like 7/30! Can't wait!!

This is one of my favourite planes as well and I am real good with that baby in FB.... Like Gemini said, dont push the stick to far and you have to modify your tactics unlike all other planes in FB or you will be in an engine die out scenario and get shot up, since the fuel is distributed using gravity.

I was a big fan of the I-16 in IL2- Great fun! But I was instantly put off when I first tried it in FB and she said "cough!" and died! Took me a month before I got back into her again! I guess I couldn`t resist the cheeky character of the plane. It`s like an aerial WWII version of the Mini! (I reckon this is the real reason those Luftwhiners hate her- she`s just too cute!). /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

Unfortunately they won`t stop picking on the I-16 and with the patch she not only coughs but stalls and even spins quite easiy! It`s not fair!! /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-indifferent.gif

I just love the Type 24,agility and firepower all wrapped up in a neat little package.Plus there's some absolutely fantastic paint schemes available that blend well with the plane's character.

You must be doing something very wrong! She will recover from stall or spin in around 500m. No problem!

I'd never join a club that would have ME as a member!!.

Just avoid negative G and you will do fine.. More than fine.. I-16 is a über plane at the moment, eats Brewsters for breakfast.. and some 109s too.. and totally immune for German small arms..and takes whole bunch of damage from 20 mm and 15 mm too.. You can outturn everything (except Chaikka). And what is worst, is that Beta 7 still didn't fix Rata beeing immune to german small caliber ammo.. I shot like 500 rouds and only managed to get a pilot kill /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif that is one tough plane.

I've just started flying the I-16 Type 24 in Il-2 and have fallen in love with it. It turns likes it's on rails and doesn't seem to lose energy. And it is definately one of the cuter planes.

Does anyone have any tips for stall recovery? Upto now I've been fying the Yak 1B or Il-2 so stall recovery wasn't really an issue. Although the I-16 doesn't stall particularly easily, I'm having problems recovering. Last night I managed to get into this weird upside-down spinning negative G red-out funk. Had to bail out. That red-out is big scary.

"After seeing the jacket I went back to our base."
"What date was it?", I asked.
"It was the 12th of June," he said. "Because it was during the World Cup."
You were watching the World Cup?"
There were no televisions because they were haram [forbidden]. But I was following it in the newspapers."
What was your favourite team?"
"England. Michael Owen and I like McManaman and David Seaman."
"England is your favourite team and you are about to blow yourself up in the jihad against kufr?"
"Politics is one thing. Football is something else."

When I fly the I-16, I like to put some extra chocolate in my milk before I start my takeoff run. By the time I get airborne, it is more thoroughly mixed than if I had put it in a blender....smoooooth.

Well first time I stalled in her, I didn`t react, I just kept trying to turn. This refusal to accept the changes meant that I then went into a spin as well! Once I realsed she`d changed her ways and wasn`t gonna pull out I went into anti stall mode- I was losing height fast:

1. Throttle back to nothing.
2. Hands off stick.
3. Rudder in opposite turn of spin.
4. wait... She levels....
5. Then gently pull her out.

I was at 2000 when it started recovering by 800, but delayed cos I took longer than usual to react.

I`ve not had quite a red-out stall yet, but I reckon the above procedeure would work for you.

p.s. If it`s a flat spin you mean- Bail.

Lol Thunderbolt.

It's got bags of character and is feared by many squads.
But it's not seen very much in servers generally.
I can think of only a couple of decent online I-16 drivers.

Perhaps,Sadly,it's because it is no longer allowed in many hosted arenas(it's banned in such as those hosted by the Finns of LLv fame-as,much to their chagrin, the Little Mule used to regularly toast their ace pilots).

People say it's overmodeled and easy to fly,but it takes a good pilot to win against a Messer driver who know's his trade-especially in FB.

In the server I fly, there are a few maps in the rotation where the I-16 is a potent and feared opponent (its primary adversary is the 109 F2/F4). It's a scripted server with Axis vs Allies Year specific so there are years that Axis has a slight advantage and vice versa. Come fly with us sometime http://www.greatergreen.com

Thanks,will do.

Btw,Blind-SC-,even though you've only recently got IL-2,you should buy FB.

It's not worth learning to fly IL2,then having to learn CEM for FB(assuming you get it eventually of course).

Oh, the day that I finally cave and pick up FB is at hand indeed! I don't know what I've waited for really. It's just that I'm having so much fun with the original, I can't imagine being able to take them both in at once. But, I think to celebrate the patch I'll pick it up on 7/30. If for anything, there's so many more servers for FB! I hardly ever see any of you guys online. A lot of times I'll go on HL at night and there's not one server to jump on at all!

There are some groups who are wimps that usually kick a player out just because they cannot win against an I-16. I had many experiences being booted, called a noob plane and pilot. I always wondered if this was a real war what would these guys do when involved in a real dogfight with that pesky I-16.

I have read great reviews of this little fighter and it is a real challenge to fly this plane with the stalls, engine die outs etc.

Are you serious? You mean like they boot a guy flying an I-16 just because he's doing well? That's stupid... I hope I never wind up on a server like that. Not that I'd be doing that well once there >8)
