Hi Shagran.
The latest version is 4.08m 99.99% of people play this version online as you noticed.
If you installed from CD's you can't go further than 4.04(m)

You can go further. The cheapest, fastest and easiest way is to buy the IL-2 Sturmovik DVD set.
This will install directly to 4.07m
All you need to do then is download and install the free 4.08m patch. Then you are able to play with the rest again online.
The DVD is very cheap by now. It includes everything from FB AEP PF, Pe-2 Peshka,Sturmoviks over Manchuria, and Sturmovik 1946. If you buy the add-on packages seperately online it will cost you a multiple of the DVD set, you have to download huge files, and battle with Boonty.

Just buy the Sturmovik 1946 DVD.
There is still one patch to come 4.09m - This requires you to have 4.08m up and running.

I don't think many people play PF standalone anymore. It never was that popular.
Why settle for PTO only if you can have PTO and all the rest combined?

Bought mine on-line. It's called 1946. You can get it at...

www.gogamer.com (http://www.gogamer.com)
www.bestybuy.com (http://www.bestybuy.com)
www.circuitcity.com (http://www.circuitcity.com)

or from the official UBI website (and many others I'm sure but these are the ones I know about).

It's not free...expect to pay $29.99 plus S&H. Circuit City had it for $19.99 for a short while but it looks like that sale is over.

You need to know a server's IP to play using that method.

Much easier to d/l and install Hyperlobby and join games in progress, or join a coop before it starts.

d/l here:
click on 'hyperlobby client' under downloads in left panel.
Install, run, be sure 'Forgottem Battles' is ticked in the box above the callsign/password section.
Select a callsign and password and complete.
If you installed the game to the default directory HL will find it.
Click 'Connect'. If not connected, try again holkding down the CTRL and SHIFT key and show H/L where your game Il2fb.exe is.
After hL in connected properly you will see starting on the left,
a column of games 'in progress', these are dogfights that you can join/fly/die/fly/etc, well most are anyway.
Next column are 'open missions' these are dogfights that are in the process of starting up.
Next are the 'coops' these are mission oriented games , that once everyone is in, the host starts the game and it's a one life session.
Once there (on Hyperlobby) you can get more assistance.

Noone uses UBI.com or direct IP mate,

Download and install Hyperlobby, its what everyone uses and there are around 600-700 pilots flying every night.
