All,

Looking for some good setups for this stick, let me know what you are using your buttons for. Seems that there is a way to use one of the buttons as a shift state ans double the nuber of functions. Anyone know how to do this?

PF_Coastie - I got your profiles from the other post but I am not sure how to set this up so that I can use the "8" button as a shift. I also found that you have modified force files, can you please explain what these are and how to use them?

Sorry for being such a noob

#1 Fire MG's
#2 Fire Cannon/extra MG's
#3 Bombs
#4 More bombs
Hat- left and right: aileron trim L & R
Hat- Up and down: aileron center
#5 & 6: Prop pitch
#7 & 8: Mixture
Throttle: Go juice

MS Sidewinder (non FF)
#1 Ignition
#2 Select all engines
#3 left engines
#4 right engines
Hat L&R: rudder trim left n right
Hat Up and down: rudder trim center
#5 - #8: Engine select 1-4 (nothing has more than 4 engines in this game)
Throttle: pitch trim

It's a bit excessive, with all that and a TrackIR to keep track of, but I like having engine controls mapped to a separate joystick.

1> MG's
2> 2ndMG's (bombs rarely used since I tend to fly fighters so they are mapped to SPACE and ALT)
3> (via NewView mapping not SW mapping) gunsight view, 'cenre whilst held' (to steady the head movement)
4> (SW macro) NUMPAD5/F1/End. This allows me to retuen to the cockpit regardless of which view I might be in and centre the view at the right zoom level.
5> FLAPS UP
7> FLAPS DOWN (I've played around with flaps mapped on the stick or not a lot. BAsically I like having them close to hand so's you can throw a few moves in the heat of a fight!)
6> BRAKE (close to hand for emergency landings)
8> F3/4 second wait/F1 macro via the SW control panel. I really like the plane fly-by's particularly as I make my own skins.

I'm looking forward to getting TR2 and freeing up the POV hat at some point.

#1 Fire 1+2
#2 Center view
#3 Fire 1
#4 Fire 2
#5 Prop pitch increase (Macro)
#6 Radiator (Macro)
#7 Prop pitch decrease (Macro)
#8 Prop pitch auto/manual
#Slider Flaps control

Using MSFF2 with the throttle from Thrustmaster Afterburner 2 so the number of buttons is not that limited. Bomber controls are on the TM AB2 stick.

1) MGs
2) Cannons
3) Brakes (important to have this on your stick when online especially during emergency landings, you don't want to reach for the keyboard with one hand in moments like this)

4) Toggle Gunsight (this can give you a better field of view if you frequently toggle between the two, especially in the FW 190 as a frame might be obstructing your target just toggle and he's in your view again)

5) Flaps up (incremental)
6) Flaps down(incremental)
7) Zoomed in Gunsight (for online identification of planes and armour this is a must)
8) Normal view

Hatswitch Left: Lock Tailwheel ( I can't tell the difference when using this but it's for historical accuracy /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif )

Hatswitch Right: Radiator settings

Hatswitch Down: Wide angle view

Hatswitch Up: zoom out(in increments) I never really use this

Throttle slider: Throttle

Track IR is used for panning

Once in a while I go bombing then I use my Sidewinder 2 for more buttons.

Here's mine, no macros or fancy stuff:

#1 - Fire machineguns
#2 - Fire cannons
#3 - Fire rockets
#4 - Drop bombs
#5 - Flaps down
#6 - Flaps up
#7 - Gunsight view
#8 - Change views (Zoom/Normal/Wide)
POV Hat - Snap/Pan view
Throttle slider - Uhm...throttle

Mouse - Mouse look
Left mouse button - Fire gun (gunners)
Right mouse button - PadLock (enemy)
Scroll wheel - Elevator trim

I use TrackIR as my main way of looking around, so I have my left hand free to use the keyboard. The functions not bound to my stick/mouse are the ones I don't use frequently, so it's no biggie. It might help that I have a Logitech keyboard with the "ergonomic" layout (split down the center and each side at a slight angle), so I have a tactile reference that helps me find the keys really fast in the middle of the keyboard too.

I haven't gotten into CEM yet, but I plan to. Might have to free up the POV Hat when I do. /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

Someone recommended a program called JoyToKey some time ago, I gave it a try and am very fond of it. It lets you use some of the buttons as "shift"-buttons, and can also make your hat switch simulate mouse-view.

I could not make all combinations work, but personally I set my MSFFB2 up with buttons 5-8 as shift-buttons, combined with hat switch. Now I control external views, flaps, gears, map, zoom/normal/wide view, padlock and WEP without using the keyboard. Try it out!

Thanks all - I'm going to try out the JoyToKey software.

See you in the skies... from the ground... as my engine catches fire and explodes... I suck at this game

Bailout, When you downloaded the zip file, There should have been some printable layouts of the stick assignments. Use the one named IL2 Medium for the 21 possible functions.

You have to go in game to the controls and set all of the functions in the left column to the appropriate keys first. Then set your stick up to match.

Here is the pic:http://home.earthlink.net/~bmcoastie/images/FFB2MEDIUM.jpg

I hope the pic works, I am having trouble with angelfire lately!

EDIT: Screw angelfire, I put it on my FTP! http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Good luck!

I'm a moron - now I get it.

You simply assign one of the keys as the actual keyboard shift button and you are good to go.

thanks again

Hey, while we're on the subject- anyone find the keys on the base a little clunky/unresponsive?

They don't feel terribly nice to press and occasionally I need to press them 2 or 3 times to initiate the command...I don't fly any other games so I'm not actually sure whether its the FFB2 or FB... ?

I guess you could say they are a little "clunky". I have never really had a problem with them though. As you can see above, I have my "shift" assigned to button 8 so I use it often without problem.

TIP: Be sure to turn of "sticky" keys and such in the Accessability options for windows. If you hold down the shift for five seconds while flying you will get an upleasant surprise if this is not disabled!

Pretty complicated mine, tring to get the most from the limited binding possibilities:

#1 Machine guns (rockets)
#2 Cannons (bombs)
#3 Flaps down (toggle gear)
#4 Flaps up (WEP/etc.)
#5 Padlock air (ext. padlock air - I never use it)
#6 Re-center view (re-center view while padlocking)
#7 Padlock ground (ext. padlock ground - I never use it)
#8 SHIFT

Throttle used for... hummm, throttle.

Aero out

EDIT Fotgot the hat switch with SHIFT (#8), beside POW:

UP Gunsight
RIGHT Padlock next
DOWN Wide view
LEFT Normal view
