View Full Version : Let's talk about AAR (Air to air rockets).

So, how do you guys use rockets in the air to air role? Not the X-4s, since those are stupid easy to use, but stuff like the RS series, the rocket mortars the germans can load up, or the rocket bombs that the late Zero's can take. I can never seem to get the timing on them right....

I use them as fireworks! http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Only time i use A2A rockets in il2 is FW190 vs B17.

And i don't think i've ever hit a B17 once with em.

Well, that things is more of a morter then a rocket, after all http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

deflection shooting with rockets is quite a challenge http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif
but the RS can be used head-on, with 2 sec delay, line up with your opponent, wait till he is stabilized as well, then launch, wait 2 sec and hopefully you fly through the vaporized wreckage of our opponent

or simply be lucky like this guy: http://www.darts-page.com/movies/Rocket_Strike.zip

RS are best in A2A work in sim, HVARS best for A2G.
WfrGr.21 is one of the most useless... I'd understand to put it on 109 but FW-190? No one would really wanna trade one pair of WfrGr's for 2x20mm or better yet for 2x30mm (as we are talking about outer cannon pair).
On bf-109 it is another story... if you hit you have a kill, which is good work considering that 1x20mm in nose is nothing to write home about vs heavy bombers. Still, I'd prefer to hang 2x20mm gondolas under 109 wings over WfrGr any day.

Aiming with WfrGr's is very difficult, somewhat similar to Tiny Tim's... point of impact is completely off the gunsight's crosshair.

In short: not worth it.
Tiny Tim has much greater value than WfrGr tho since you'd be taking that rocket vs unmaneuverable ships http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif .

I use WfGr.21 with the 190 in B-17 intercept missions only (against fighters it's too difficult to use , would slow you down considerably and affect your energy retention negatively even after you shot your rockets ).

If you put 1.0 second of rocket delay and shoot in the middle of a close B-17 formation , you can damage or destroy 2 or 3 of them cause the explosion will damage everything close to it .

IMHO one should look to destroy 2 bombers in a row with a WfGr21 shot , it's better to aim between the 2 bombers as you have a chance to destroy them both rather than trying to make a direct hit on a single one .

I have trouble destroying one (if it ain't direct hit) http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif .

Best A2A Rockets are on the I-153, I never fly without them, set the rocket delay to 1.5 sec and they will explode right next to your target if you don't get the direct hit. Usually doesn't do much but I have downed some planes with a near miss and I guarentee the pilot of that plane will need a new change of underwear!

So how far do you guys launch them from?

WfrGr.21 is a rocket propelled mortar round. The idea behind them and the reason they are mounted at an upwards angle was to have a group of interceptors lob them threw a box of heavy bombers with three to five second timers. If they did not make a direct impact hopefully the blast would take a few down. There trajectory was in an arch.

Here's how i launch it (4.09 ntrk) :

Here i prepare myself to shoot when the target "fills" my gunsight (one should aim below the target with WfGr21) , i always do this in any plane :

I shoot the WfGr21 ( 1 second of delay ) :

It explodes just above the B-17 , destroying the tail , igniting fuel tanks of both wings

boom :

As we see in this pic , the explosion is rather far from the plane , if another B-17 was near the explosion , it would take damage :

I hope my track and pics will convince you http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

However , it's rare that you can destroy 2 bombers in a row ( usually i destroy one and damage a bit another with WfGr21's ) because they have to fly in very close formation , but sometimes it happens , especially when they start to turn or when they panic during an attack
