View Full Version : Maybe we could use some Texan variants for this!

I think that an area that could potentially be done for the PF sim has been drastically overlooked, or maybe it hasn't been thought of enough.

I would like to see a portion of Lake Michigan and Chicago modeled for use of the USS Wolverine and an SNJ Texan. You might be asking yourself if it is nessicary, and I will say that it is important because it is where pilots trained to do carrier landings during WWII.

I thought of this painting when I came up with this:

The USS Wolverine and her sister ship, Sable, were used as training ships for the USN.
I understand that it is really low priority, but this could yield for us a carrier trainer, among other spawn of the NA-16.

Just an idea for the remaining modelers.

Thanks for your time!

did they not use WW wildcats, as well?

Yes, they did use Wildcats. quite a few ended up on the bottom of Lake Michigan... http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_eek.gif

Another interesting fact is that the USS Wolverine and USS Sable were the only sidewheel carriers ever built. They were converted from Great Lakes passenger steamers.

USS Wolverine (IX-64)
If you go here (http://www.twaintimes.net/boat/sbpage5.htm), you will find film footage of air ops on USS Wolverine!

Yes, they are side-paddle carriers, which makes then greatly unique. They are also very small. I think I should also note that some of those Wildcats made their way to Pensacola after speanding some time at the bottom of the cold lake.

Would any, or a few Texan variants be possible?

And with the map, I know there are several reat referrences out there, but still, maybe it could be a semi historical online map so it would have greater use. Either way, I think it's a unique take to further submerge us into the Forgotten Battles scenerio - besides, where were US Navy pilots in 1939 and 1940?

Hmmm. When I thought of what may have been drastically overlooked, I thought maybe China/Burma theatre. I must admit that Lake Michigan and Chicago was the absolute furthest thing from my mind. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/blink.gif

If we are begging for portions of our home turf. Then I would suggest Darwin, Australia. At least it saw some action.

yeah, that would be really cool, but then I'de only yearn for a Flyable G3M, hehe. CBI is coming.

this is kind of off topic, but I've been expirimenting with taking off Ju 87s and BF 109Es off from the generic IJN carrier. I wish we had a generic carrier in German colors.

OK enough wishing.
