Sorry for the off-topic post, but I don't know what to do anymore.

My Dell M60 laptop recently messed up (Dell and a local computer technician suspected bad software) and I had to reinstall Windows XP and the additional drivers.

Now, my computer is "back to normal" except for two things:

1) Picture files tend forever to load. I can open a folder with pictures and it takes minutes to view them. A few minutes ago, I uploaded some pictures from my digital camera unto my computer and it takes forever to identify them and show the thumbnail. Before the foul up, my computer could read and show them in no time.

Folders also tend to hang and I keep getting a " MS Explorer has performed an illegal operation..." warning when I simply open up a folder. This bullsh*t is pissing me of. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_mad.gif

and

2) IL-2 1946 runs so damn slow in Pilot Career mode. I can have the speed set to 8X and the computer has a hard time coping. Strange, before the foul up, IL-2 1946 worked just fine.

God this stuff pisses me off. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_mad.gif

Thanks in advance for the tips and help. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Hallo Christian,

kein Grund zum Verzweifeln http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

Please post the specs of your Laptop.

Did you install any drivers yet? Especially the drivers for your mainboard chipset. On most systems the HDDs won't reach their full speed without them.

Did you defragment your HDDs?

Checked the HDDs for errors?

Did you do a RAM test?

Do you use security software, i.e. Anti Virus and/or firewalls?

I was talking with a Dell technician and he helped me setup the reinstallation of Windows. He said that if I follow these specific procedures, Windows would reformat the HD by itself. It seems it was true since my HD was empty when the computer worked again.

Then I downloaded, using my mom's computer, the drivers I needed and installed them in the order that the Dell technician told me too. Here's the email:

I did all that and like I said, the computer works fine except for the pictures and folders. They cause my computer to slow down or hang and it really bugs me since I work a lot with photoshop and take tons of pics with my digital camera. Also, when using photoshop, if I open a folder using photoshop, it again takes minutes for the picture thumbs to load. Annoying as hell. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_frown.gif

I also checked online and it seems that the problem could be with the REGISTRY. &lt;--- ??? I'll need to download and PAY ( http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_confused.gif ) for this stuff - unless someone here knows a free site! http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Thanks for the upcoming advice! http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Why should you pay for that stuff http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/354.gif

Have you installed the current DirectX 9?
You will need it for 1946.

The technician has bad orthography, and I would install the network driver before the Modem driver and Direct X before installing any graphic or sound driver.
Not sure what the Dell software is needed for.

But the rest of the instructions is correct.
Check your Laptop for a virus or malware.
Download a trial version of Kaspersky Anti Virus
or try NOD32 anti virus. Both are very good.

Can you give any details about the mess up?
What happened exactly?

So the only problem is the picture preview ?

Maybe you used indexed services to access them faster before now they need to be recreated that takes time.

IL-2 1946 and Direct X9 are installed.

Well, this is what happened:

I was playing GTA3 San Andreas when all of a sudden the game becomes really slow. I pause for awhile and then resume and all of a sudden the game hangs and the computer doesn't respond. So I restart the computer by turning it off, waiting 20 seconds and turning it on again.

The desktop loads as usual, but the screen resolution has changed and clicking on the desktop icons or START buttons have no effect. In SAFE MODE though, it works. So I transfer all my important files unto an external HD and then proceed to contact my local computer technicians. He has not the slightest clue what might be wrong here but he runs me through a couple of options.

First, we tried to reset the computer to March 20 or March 22, because this thing crashed on Sunday. No effect. The desktop icons in normal mode don't respond. We tried this twice, March 20 or March 22, nothing. So then he tells me that I have to reinstall Windows XP and that should take care of the problem. This time I contact Dell and they tell me the same thing but also add that I need to install the following drivers and that I need to install them exactly as they say. So I did just that.

Like I said, the computer works fine now except for the picture loading when opening folders. Worse, this computer will often hang if it has to read a mere 30 pictures (500 kb each on average) from my digital camera.

IL-2 1946 works fine in Quick Mission but in Pilot Career mode, it runs very slowly in normal mode and even 8X. Or maybe it's just my career? I started a BF-109F-2 Eastern Front North career and it's running very slowly. My Ta-152H pilot career seems to be working ok though... http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/35.gif

I will give those systems a try. Typing in www.download.com (http://www.download.com) as we speak...

That and the IL-2 1946 pilot careers, or maybe only my BF-109F2 career...

I don't understand your second sentence. I usually have the picture files displayed in LIST mode in folders, but even in that mode it takes forever for the JPEG logo to load. Really annoying. Any idea what I should download? A lot of internet sources say this might be a registry problem - that some of the old registry files have survived somehow and are slowing down the computer...

Obvious question, but I dont htink you actually say above :-

Have you installed your graphics card drivers after reformat?

Try this driver :-

http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp_2k_91.36

Its different to the 'update' you have used, and is the full latest Nvidia Quadro FX driver.

WHy would it be incompatible with your computer?

ISnt your card a Quadro FX 1000 Go? Thats the driver for it, or so it says on the Nvidia site?

WHat message did you get?

IS the driver you reinstalled, the driver you were using before all this happened?

If thats the wrong driver, then find the correct one from the Nvidia site and install that.

Are you running VISTA? If so thats why, the one I gave you was for XP.

http://www.nvidia.com/content/drivers/drivers.asp

Go here and pick the correct driver. I am thinking its something to do with the jpeg/bmp veiwing on your video card, and the driver might be at fault.

That's the thing: IT DIDN'T WORK. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_frown.gif

I have Windows XP and I saw that the link you gave was Windows XP as well - and it still didn't work. I could download the application, but upon installation I got a message that said that the system couldn't find any suitable drivers. Either my computer is seriously f***** up or there was a problem with the program? http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_confused.gif

If it is a problem with the JPEG and BITMAP reading capabilities of the machine, what do I do?

ON A SIDE NOTE, I INSTALLED GTA3: San Andreas JUST NOW AND THIS GAME RUNS INCREDIBLY SLOW!

EXCUSE THE LANGUAGE, BUT WHAT THE F*CK!? THIS DAMN TECHNICAL PROBLEMS ARE JUST PISSING ME OFF. ESPECIALLY SINCE I AM AN AVID GAMER. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_mad.gif

I think your hard drive is bad. I've had this happen at work. The drive runs and is functional but is really slow. Took me weeks to figure out what was really going on. You can't really tell unless you are loading large files (like games and pictures.)

Xiolablu3

I htink that your graphics card drivers or motherboard AGP port drivers are simply screwed up, it may have also misidentified your card, and once you reinstall the correct drivers all will be well.

Defragging and reg cleaners will not fix this.

OK Chris, I will help you fix this... Please answer these questions...

1. Go to Mycomputer&gt;COntrol Panel&gt;System&gt;HArdware&gt;Device manager

OPen the Display Adaptors tab and tell me what it says there. It SHOULD say Geforce FX 1000 GO. (If this is definitely your card)

2. WHat model is your computer? (eg. Dell Dimension 4200)

3. Do you have a Via chipset motherboard, or a NForce, Or an Intel? Or what? Did you reinstall your Motherboard drivers after your reformat?

I agree with StellarRat, your hard drive is probably faulty.

Open My Computer. Right click your C drive and select properties. Click Tools. Click Check Now under Error Checking. Select both options. Click Start.

It should ask you if you want to run the check next time your computer restarts. Say yes.

Reboot your computer. It should run the disk checker. Depending on the size of the disk, and whether it has any faults, it might take hours.

When it finishes, it will flash up the results briefly, then your computer will restart.

Logon. Click the start menu, then Run. Type in eventvwr and select OK.

In event viewer, go to the Application log. Look for an entry called winlogon. Double click it, and it will give you the results of the disk check. If you have any bad sectors, the drive is faulty, and your best bet is to get a new one.

If you don't have any bad sectors, the drive is probably ok, but I wouldn't count on it.

But a faulty hard drive wouldnt make GTA3 or other games run slowly.

It would either load or it wouldnt.

BTW dont stress about this Christian, its a good excuse to learn more about your computer.

hop2002

A faulty hard drive usually shows up as one or two applications not working properly, and everything else running very slowly.

In particular anything that involves lots of disk access will run slowly, like opening a folder full of pictures on thumbnail view.

Xiolablu3
03-31-2007, 09:58 AM
But it certainly wouldnt cause a game to have a lower framrate than usual, if thats what Christian means.

Its more likely to be a driver problem.

It may be a bad disc IF he had games failing to load, and strange errors where the disc has failed while trying to load a part of the game, or has got to a bad sector and a CERTAIN picture file was corrupt.. &lt;- But I dont believe thats his problem.

As far as I understand it :-

SOme games are running with a poor framerate.
Pictures take a long time to load.

If thats ^ the case, then it will not be a faulty harddisc.

Because the pictures are loading a bit faster now and I don't get the "...MS Explorer has performed an illegal operation..." warnings anymore, but games still run slow. Here are the downloads for your system.

http://support.euro.dell.com/support/downloads/driversl...P4_M60&os=WW1&osl=EN (http://support.euro.dell.com/support/downloads/driverslist.aspx?c=uk&cs=ukdhs1&l=en&s=dhs&ServiceTag=&SystemID=WRK_NBK_PNT_P4_M60&os=WW1&osl=EN)

I suspect it may be this one

:-

http://support.euro.dell.com/support/downloads/download...bid=27&fileid=149851 (http://support.euro.dell.com/support/downloads/download.aspx?c=uk&cs=ukdhs1&l=en&s=dhs&releaseid=R114079&SystemID=WRK_NBK_PNT_P4_M60&servicetag=&os=WW1&osl=en&deviceid=1134&devlib=0&typecnt=0&vercnt=3&catid=-1&impid=-1&formatcnt=1&libid=27&fileid=149851)

But it could also be one of hte others, I dont have time to look through them all nowin detail.

Will look later.

You can try any of the stuff on that page that sounds like it may help reinstall AGP/GFX/Motherboard chiipset.

Xiolablu3

I just reread your original post, and I see that folders sometimes hang and give and illegal operation. Also that you already installed these that I suggested above.

Did you reboot between installing the chipset driver and gfx card driver? If you havent tried reinstalling the gfx card driver, then try that.

I guess it could be your hard drive, since I saw the 'illegal operation' bit in your post, but I cant see how this would cause your games to run slow.

Can you look again at the device manager, and see if there is a yellow exclamation mark against anything?

I just reread your original post, and I see that folders sometimes hang and give and illegal operation. Also that you already installed these that I suggested above.

Did you reboot between installing the chipset driver and gfx card driver? If you havent tried reinstalling the gfx card driver, then try that.

I guess it could be your hard drive, since I saw the 'illegal operation' bit in your post, but I cant see how this would cause your games to run slow.

Can you look again at the device manager, and see if there is a yellow exclamation mark against anything? </div></BLOCKQUOTE>

Thanks for taking the time to help me out, really appreciate it. I just checked device manager again and looked at every submenu and there was no yellow exclamation mark anywhere.

Thanks for the links, checking them out now.

I'll be in Italy tomorrow until Saturday. I'll dig up the thread until then. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

EDIT: I had a look at the link but I have absolutely zero idea what to download and install. Sorry for being such a moron when it comes to computers!!! http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

DxDiag report looks good, you got all the correct drivers.
(One might find newer ones, but these are the ones Dell suggests, so that's okay.)
- There's a BIOS update availble at Dell (A09) but I don't think it'll solve yer problems...

Can't really analyse this problem, but me thinks it is hardware related, maybe temps, maybe the video card's fan has stopped working?

Good Luck!

I dont htink overheating would cause a steady low framrate foottrottel.

DO you not think its somehting to do with his AGP port drivers or Gfx card drivers?

Thats the only thing I can think of which would make games run slowly. Maybe he needs to reinstall his Motherboard driver. REBOOT. And then reinstall his GFX card driver.

Christian, once you had extracted the drivers, did you extract to a folder and then run the .exe file from that folder? Its not enough just to extract them, you MUST go to the folder and run the .exe
