View Full Version : Panzerschiff D ~ Ersatz Elsass

Hi all. No, I have not lost my head. The DKM Scharnhorst was origionally going to be called "Ersatz Elsass" and be a different design.

I was wondering if anybody had the info on her origional design? I found a website, but it is all in German and I have no idea what it says.

BTW The German Website I found is lost and I can't find it again. It had design line drawings of concept to concept. More a forum like this really. If anybody finds it, I will be able to confirm it as what I found or not.

Thanks again girls/guys.

Hi Karl,

Good to hear from you again! http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

I take it you are looking for construction plans? I did a quick search and found a book which should answer all your needs: "Battleship Scharnhorst" by "Gerhard Koop & Klaus-Peter Schmolke" ISBN "0-85177-748-1. Apparently it has detailed accounts of her construction and includes hull frame plans at the back, along with arc's of fire etc.. IIRC you live in the UK? If so, you might be able to order it through the inter-library loan scheme.

Hope this helps.

Here! (http://www.schlachtschiff.com/kriegsmarine/schlachtschiff_scharnhorst/index.asp)

The forum has a section for construction plans and concepts, but is closed (read only!) since 2005.

Ersatz Elsass means "as replacement for
SMS Elsass (http://www.deutsche-schutzgebiete.de/sms_elsass.htm)" - wrecked 1936.

Edit: fine you are ok!

@ Kielhauler1961, Yes, I have tha book, but it only has plans for the Scharnhorst, NOT the "Ersatz Elsass" which was laid down in 1934 then cancilled and broken up when the French started Dunkirqe (sp) to be replaced with the Scharnhorst.

Laid down 1934 to replace old WW1 Battleships but cancelled later that year and replaced by Scharnhorst class. Sister:- Ersatz Hessen. Displacement 20,000t Dimensions 230m x 25.5m x 8.5m Armament 6 x 11" 8 x 5.9" 8 x 105mm Torpedo Tubes 6 x 21", Speed 29 knots Armour 4" Deck, 8" Belt

I have this page for your reference but the picture is wrong I think. Not sure.
