Thanks for them Orheim, I've never heard those before. Very poignant, incredible how they were as cool as the proverbial British cucumber.

It makes you wonder how many, if any, of those aircrew survived the war. I think I once read that for every five men that stepped on-board a Lanc - only one saw the end of the war, and on a big mission bomber command would lose as many men in one night as RAF fighter command lost in the entire battle of Britain.

Thanks for that Orheim. Bookmarked as suggested.

Snafu, might like a look here for further information:-

Bomber Command casualties were indeed horrific.

Thanks for that Orheim. As the son of a Lanc Pilot this just further strengthens my respect for him and his generation. The coolness under pressure is amazing.

Thank you for that. I have the recordings on my hard drive from way back, but have long since lost the transcripts. I can't tell you how grateful I am to you.
Regards
John.

Shame there is no film of the incidents....but attacking at night no Hollywood or BBC film editor would be interested as obviously too dark for filming.

But these RAF guys (including Canadian,Australian and New Zealanders) were slaughtered in their thousands and their is no pictorial record of their sacrifice. 70% of bombs dropped on Germany were by RAF crews.

Thats one of the reasons i would like to see Lancasters in BoB as soon as possible..IL2 is pretty good for its night flying.

Replayed them again and am staggered by their calmness all over again. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-surprised.gif

There is! There is a colour motion picture record of a Lancaster mission into Germany. I saw it on TV sometime in the 1980s in tandem with a colour record of a B-17 mission. Much of it is quite astonishing, not least the sight of dozens of Lancasters moving out on taxi-ways and taking off at dusk. As you say, the darkness somewhat limits the visual appeal but it was done.

If I was being really useful I'd be able to provide a link. It was probably on the BBC. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

**Edit** If you're willing to part with some hard earned denarii you can own the above "Night Bombers" via this site/link. The DVD in question is about 2/3rds of the way down or search for "night raid." It purports to be the only colour footage in existence of a Lancaster night raid on Berlin and is almost certainly what I was thinking.
