View Full Version : Pwn (off-topicness)

10-08-2007, 02:14 AM
So the other day I was playing Halo 3, and a teammate and I got into an argument about the pronunciation of the term "pwn". I argued that it sounds like it is spelled "pohwn" and he argued that it sounds like the term from which it is derived "ohwn".

I wanted to know what other people think.

I'm pretty sure it's owhn. because it started out as a typo of own (thi p is right next to the o)

10-08-2007, 03:02 AM
That brings up another debate: Was it a typo or was it misspelled intentionally?

But that's a topic for another time/thread.

hmmm not sure http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif either way
its still defeating someone so extremely that its embarassing. the definition stay the same >.<

I always thought is was pronounced pee-own, but i think it sould just be spelt the normal way http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

the original term was indeed ownd. sounding like OH-ND. however some uber nerds started using the term "power ownd" which in turn became pwnd. pronounced: POH-ND

yet another piece of useless knowledge http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

"power owmd"... my god, where is this world going to... I myself am not a computergeek and I think (hardcore) gamers are okay people as well... but as soon as they start using terms like 'power ownd' I get really really sad... And when I get really really sad, people tend to die...

10-08-2007, 10:08 AM
I pronounce it 'pohwn'.

10-08-2007, 10:09 AM
All hail aunt Soesa http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

I'm afraid that only seasamstraat will agree http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/shady.gif

10-08-2007, 10:12 AM
I agree!

10-08-2007, 12:36 PM
I pronounce it "poon" for some unknown reason http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/shady.gif I'll blame my sister for that one...

10-08-2007, 12:46 PM
I see 'pooned' as much as pwned so i'd say it's that, lol.

10-08-2007, 12:52 PM
there are two different things,
1. there is "poon" spelled pwn.
2. there is a way that (what I think stupid people) people call it "pown" don't know how you would spell that cuz its dumb imo.
3. there is own, just another way of saying pwn.

10-08-2007, 01:06 PM
yeah you forget another option: "poon".

but that's mostly for things like "poonage" lol but i say pohn with the p

10-08-2007, 01:15 PM
I was unaware that it was "Power Ownage" originally... but, yes, I agree that it is indeed "POHnd." As for the poonage, I have only used the word "poon" in reference to the "poontang" so I do not associate it with killing people in a videogame.

I pronounce it Pawn, like the Chess piece.

10-08-2007, 02:43 PM
Depends on how I'm feeling and whether or not I screw it up while I try and say it(Happens a lot).

I will say that if I had to pick a definitive way of my form of pronunciation for it, it would sound just like owned but with the p at the front.

Like powned. I've heard people say 'pooned' but that just sounds terrible in my opinion, sounds like somebody was saying poop but tried to change it at the last second...

Pawned is another good way of saying it in my opinion.

I think we can all agree on the tone it should be said. Extremely loud. Nothing else is acceptable and if you think otherwise then you can go fall in a ditch. PWNED!!!!11one!!!

Pure Ownage = Pwnage

10-08-2007, 04:09 PM
So many different ways of saying it...
My friend's brother says "pawned" usually. I've never heard it pronounced "poon" before, and I'm not sure I'd want to as it makes me think of a certain part of female anatomy http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/shady.gif.
"I pooned you, I totally effing pooned you!" http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/blink.gif Yeah, okay...

10-08-2007, 04:14 PM
For me its pronounced pown, pownage, not pawnage, but I spell it pwnage.

10-08-2007, 07:52 PM
ye... "poon" i say it like that

10-08-2007, 11:16 PM
i allways looked at the term in this way:

i understood it was a way of telling me or (*cough cough*) some one else i (ehm...) or some one else got pounded owend (like buyed he he) and like pawne like chess (miss spell there)

so i conclude it means:

owend(like in a shop but a hore kinda ownd) pwan(like in chess you are in my hand and if i say so you die) pounded (numerus punches until black out or some thing close to that)

that's all

To be honest any1 that uses the word is a bit of a geek, in my opinion
no offence or anything http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

For the win.

I usualy say kapunsicht, just because I'm norwegian, but if I'm pushed into saying the p-word I say Pawn ^^

(For all those none Norwegians, kapunsicht is as far as I know, not a real word, but if it were it would have been german http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif
