Is it normal for AI planes to go off in a seemingly random direction instead of following the waypoints for the mission?

I'm on a USMC mission where my flight is supposed to be heading a short distance south west from midway to help some SBDs but everytime I try it, my flight gets to a certain point, turns 90 degrees off course and flys off in the wrong direction, leaving me with a choice of following them on a very long detour or hanging around to attempt to defend the SBDs single handed.

Is it a Dgen mission? They have automated waypoints that sometimes make no sense at all.

Are they reacting to nearby enemy aircraft you have yet to detect visually?

The mission in question is part of a dynamic campaign if that's what is meant by Dgen. The direction taken by the AI does not correspond either with the waypoints on the mission briefing map or the direction that the compass on the wildcat is telling me I should be going. Also there is no message from the flight leader giving me a new bearing at the point at which they turn off course.

I'm sure they are not reacting to enemy planes either. There is no "fighters at 3 o'clock" type comment and using ctrl F2 to cycle through the enemy planes reveals only some zeroes that are approaching Midway from the south east but the rest of my flight has is heading north west from Midway.

Hmmmm, I have been playing this game for a long time, please note my forum registration date at the bottom of my post!! And I have played mostly offline, only occasionally online. And at that, I have mostly played Dgen campaigns!!! And I have never, and I do mean never, had a problem with AI not going where they are supposed to go. At least not that I can remember.

If you can, go into your 'Missions' folder under your main install and then go to 'Campaign' folder. Under that folder go 'UM' folder, which is for USMC campaigns. Then there will be one or more actual campaign folders that say something like 'dgen_1_guadaldoe0'. Where "doe" is the generic name for your character if you don't type in some other pilot name when you start a new "pilot" in the main menu. So if you named your pilot "Smith", it will say that instead.
Yours will not say "guadal" but "midway" instead.

Then you will find files like 21110.mis, but the number may be different in your case. The first number '2' stands for the year 1942, the next two numbers stand for the month, then the next two the date of the month. So in my example the date is November 11th, 1942. Find the last/highest number, which corresponds to the date of your last mission in that campaign.
Open this "mis" file in Notepad or Wordpad or some other text editor. Then copy it and then paste it in a new post in this thread. The whole entire thing too. I will try to fly it and determine what, if anything, is wrong with the mission or campaign.

I tried Lowengrin several times, didn't like it at all!!! Once you know how to edit and tweak Dgen, it's really great......Besides, it has no affect on AI behavior at all. If AI do strange things in Dgen, they will in Lowengrin's generator too!!!
I still think his problem [ original poster ] is either a misunderstanding of something, or is easily solvable.
