Oh man I'm shattered.

I took up a Ki61-1 Otsu vs. a P-38L in a duel to do some testing of how things are with the new patch.

Both had full tanks and the P-38 was an Ace of course. It took me forever to force a resolution to the scrap that lasted over 20 minutes.

Early on I passed him and got on his rear quarter, but it took me forever to get a firing solution on him. When I did I hit him a bit, then had to maneuver for a while managing energy all the time in order to close on him. After about 6 minutes I got close enough for another shot. This time I managed to do significant damage to his left engine, which started to pour out the lovely black smoke of death. So I hung back a little and expected it to get worse, but he flew on obstinately. So I had go close on him again to dish out some more of the Emperors lead. This next pass I decided I had had enough of this, so I closed up so that he filled up the screen and rake the plane from left to right using the rudder. Chunks flew off, and I nearly rammed him. I had to pull up hard and roll sharply to the right to avoid hitting him. I nearly stalled it doing this but I did not. My shooting was rewarded with some flames coming out of the left. I swung around and closed in on him again and saw why I nearly rammed him. Both engines were stopped dead, with the left one blazing away.

With no engines he was surely doomed. There were islands nearby and one had an American base on it. It looked like he was going to be able to glide home to a warm bed and a hot meal. Seeing him gliding on incensed me, so I swung around behind him once more and leaned on the triggers till I got some results. Incredibly, I finally saw the canopy fly off and he jumped out, just as I heard the bolts on my guns ram home on empty chambers. I watched his canopy billow and considered following his chute down, but I noticed my engine was acting up. Making the happy grinding sound of a Ha-40 that has been pushed hard and given up its all for me. I spend the next half hour gaining height and nursing it back home over seemingly endless stretches of water, slowly decreasing my revs, coaxing and silently pleading with her to last a few more miles. I must have been leading a clean life lately, because I made a safe landing at a friendly base. Sadly, the engine will need swapping before my plane will fly again. And given the supply situation that the JAAF labored under this could be weeks before it can be accomplished.
