Umm - Did the F4U use its landing gear as air brakes during bombing runs?

It could and did, but I don't know how frequently it was used.

You can do it in IL2 also, if you have a key-press mapped for "dive-brake".

Used extensively in Korea, at the very least. I don't know how much they were used in WWII.

Freaked me out - I was watching AI Pilot 8 F4U-1C's with 4000lbs of bombs sink a destroyer. They got over the target, pulled it over like it was a Ju-87, and dropped its gear. very cool...

Go to this site, http://www.zenoswarbirdvideos.com/main.html , and watch the F4U video. It will show the gear being used as dive brakes. Those wide 'plates' on each main gear leg were there to add drag.
