This has probably been covered before and if so, I apologize for bringing it up again. How many ships of a convoy do you have to spot before a contact report can be transmitted? I was dogging a convoy on the surface, reloading and watching for escorts while trying to make a successful contact report. I could make all the status reports I could send but no luck on the contact reports. They would not show up on the message log. I waited at least an hour for a reply just in case, but still nichts. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_confused.gif Frustrating to say the least! Thanks.

I don't know how many ships but you have to be at a "safe" distance as well.

I don't know exactly how far but if you are dodging destroyers you are too close.

I usually use a game exploit, that is once I spot a convoy I back off until I can't see it. Select a bunch of ships quickly and then send the contact report.

You don't have to be that picky. But if you are right next to the target you are not going to be sending anything.

All you need to do to test this is send a status report. Try it next time you are deck gunning someone. It won't go.

Maybe someone who has figured this out in more detail can give some better answers. Figureing out contact reports has not been high on my list. I have been busy figureing out crash dive times for subs latley.

You're right. There are higher priority items I should be spending time on.

One.

Circumstances under which your RA may not "send" a contact report would include a recent report from BdU or your RA sent a report already. Every now and then the RA would be recalcitrant but usually, a first sighting would generate the report.

Note: the contact report will always give the convoy's base course but the speed will be taken from the ship sighted. If your report is based on a DD going 10 knots while escorting a 6 knot convoy, the report will give a speed of 10 knots. Generally, if you sight an escort and a merchant, the contact report will be right. Usually, you WILL sight the merchant first. Send your report and withdraw so that you can set up your attack.

Read my posts on Murmansk convoys for all the information you'll ever need about contact reports.

Sounds like good advice. I'll keep a closer eye on my RA. Danke. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

Apologies in advance, but what does sending a contact report accomplish? What are you doing, telling Germany that you found a convoy? Do they send in an airstrike? I don't get it.

I've been playing with the default 29% realism... so is it something that I'd need to jack up the realism to appreciate?

Keep in mind once a large convoy starts zigzagging it will lose 2knts or so over the speed reported. And if you watch carfully the ships in the center will at times come to a complete stop.

I try to be a good nazi and report convoys so that maybe another U-boat will get vectored in. Also, maybe it will get me more reknown. Funny you should mention it, but just last week a JU-88 attacked a ship that I had reported (not a convoy) and was attacking submerged. Was fun to watch for a change.

Yes, they will send in an airstrike if possible...you can't count on it though, it depends on location as well as date. BUT, if they do send planes and they sink an enemy that you have damaged, you get full credit.
