View Full Version : When should the Moderator lock the door?

Plenty of subjects posted are off topic. A lot of us enjoy them, even the Mods, and determining which ones are worthy of a life can be very subjective. As a quick comparison: yesterday when I came to the forum it seemed quite a few were locked; some I understood why, and some I didn't. Today there weren't as many, but I really understood...and was darn glad.

I'm sure moderation has a lot of enjoyment, but there has to be plenty of exasperation. I haven't been here very long but its easy for me to imagine this place with no authority. I think in a few weeks it would not be recognized as being identified with FB. I've even had mixed feelings with my decision to post this. It seems almost any attempt with a subject in which the opinions can carry depth, there's the risk of members ending up at each other's throat.

I'm wondering how others feel concerning limitations on what is appropriate for subject matter in our forum. Also, without getting too personal, over all how to you think the moderators do. I enjoy the general latitude. The scope of freedom and the ability to express yourself can make it very satisfying. Of the few posts I've started most could be considered off topic. And there are times when others are involved in an ongoing heated exchange and I begin to feel like a spectator. I even wonder how stimulating this forum would be if off topics weren't a major part of discussion.

In the end though one thing has become very clear...I wish I was the one with the ax.

I think the mods generally do a good job and I know they can't watch 24/7, but I wish they'd nip some threads a bit closer to the sweater, sooner.

So a few (dumb) threads here and there don't bother me one bit.

I am thinking that the "ax" is overrated. It is much more likely a burden to wield than a pleasure. I have observed that moderators frequently must endure negative harangues from some of those who get duly censored or from their allies (unless those cross the line and deserve banning). <u>There is sometimes public second-guessing of moderator actions or perceived inaction.</u> Still, a moderator cannot be overly sensitive or be fearful of criticism. There will always be vocal critics who are never placated because the word "fair" has different meanings to different readers. Furthermore, these mods volunteer their own time, but are still accountable to Ubi. They have shown by their steadfastness to these boards that they do care even with only the occasional public thanks from the community--there are no standing ovations. If they did not care, they would have already abandoned this place and left it to its own wiles. They do not swing the "ax" to inflate their own egos, and in swinging it there are consequences.

I applaud our moderators on the great job they are doing. They do not try to control every thread or conversation 1) because they cannot possibly monitor every thread every hour of the day; 2) such a forum requires an overwhelming majority of responsible posters to exist--and I think most here are responsible (with a few excesses of emotion expressed now and then). The moderators, indeed, try to moderate when they can, then "lock" when the thread is too far-gone in pointless verbal barbs, or has lost its focus. It is sometimes difficult to judge when that line of excess has been crossed, and maybe we would like to see different outcomes to forum conflicts at times. Nevertheless, I think we need to give the moderators the benefit of the doubt, and realize that they try to do their best. And we should try to help them out by being good "netizens" ourselves. /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

As far as O.T. is concerned, there are so many "gray-area" threads initiated each day that they cannot all be dealt the "lock". However, if the moderators tolerated each and all the off-topic threads, the unofficial O.T. forum would have to close its doors, and we can't allow that to happen, either. /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

I have seen Moderators lock the door when the same subject is brought up again and again " EXCEPT " When RayBanJockey starts his TRIM WHINNING - Over and Over and Over Again (go over to Oleg's room he has another new post started ) and it's never locked - WHY ? . I am sure that Oleg is tired of reading the Loser's post and after 3 years of reading this forum I know that I am fed up with it. And Moderators should lock the door when RBJ starts his Crap !

I have never responded to one of his post do to the fact that I do understand that it only fuels the fire . But the Question still stand's why do the Moderators allow him to make such redundent post and lock other's redundant post ? Does he know someone up high in the UBI chain - Is he Olegs son ? Or is he just one of the BOYZZ So we will tolerate him . Start locking the Idiot and he will also go away !

He keeps within the guidelines most of the time. When he doesn't he gets a warning through PM like everyone else.
We don't treat him differently.
If that's your feeling I'd appreciate some more detailed feedback.
RBJ ain't a flooder or a spammer in the full sense of the word.
I agree that his posts sometimes can be full of nothing but, then again, he's far from the only one like that.

Yeah, I know Oleg is tired of it. RBJ and others use additional, easily made alias to support their drivel or spam anonymously

I don't have to use the decrepit Ubi Search function to find a very recent moderator post. There are two posting to this very thread! /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-tongue.gif /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

Also, there are two moderators posting in another thread which was started just yesterday. This link leads to the post by EURO_Snoopy: http://forums.ubi.com/messages/message_view.asp?name=us_il2sturmovik_gd&id=yxzgv
[EDIT: The title and the originating post in that thread is a bit inflammatory, IMO; the mods show tolerance by not ending it, even though E_Snoopy reveals he is a bit irritated by its whiney tone.]
This one links to Vengeanze's post in that same thread: http://forums.ubi.com/messages/message_view.asp?name=us_il2sturmovik_gd&id=yxybl

Oh, and OberstWiley just made my point about the way some people second-guess and disparage the mods.

Pro-active - Active

Now to address the what is perceived as lack of moderators available....we do have lives, I've been away on business trips and have notified people via posts.

Frankly I've grown tired of the constant baby bs that is ever present in most posts...why do I need to respond to these? Oh yes I'm asleep, absent,a joke now I remember! I've limited my time lately and rarely respond to posts.

The only reason I even see a need to on this is the post saying we are jokes..... batter up young man, get in the box. I'd challenge anyone to spend the time needed and balance their personal lives, including outside projects like beta testing, websites, research on problems, reading through mountains of useless dribble in posts.....as any moderator has to do.

Well boys and girls this one has taken the cake.....

Oh dear....

pith:
the essential part; the quintessence (came to the pith of his argument).
........ better be thought a fool than to open your mouth and remove all doubt.

You could always take an " altarnit rowt" he he he

Tedious unoriginal philosophical statement the pith of which is lost in repetition.

A counter-reference to a dictionary of the Queen's English would have been sufficient to make your point without the insults.

Your words and your tone about Americans appear to fit perfectly with the idiomatic use of the word "ax" that I listed earlier.

Idiom:

<CITE>ax to grind</CITE><DL><DD> A selfish or ulterior aim: <CITE>He claimed to be disinterested, but I knew he had an ax to grind.</CITE> </DD></DL>

I'd start by banning Ven, Hunter and Rock.

That should raise the tone in here a fair bit./i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

RBJ is a true classic...a forum troll who actually knows how to push peoples' buttons without getting in trouble.

Anyone who thinks out-of-the-box and parries neanderthalic groupthink as efficaciously as RBJ is AOK in my book...lol! /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-tongue.gif /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif
